Editorial
Today we are happy to announce the EADI ISS Conference « Solidarity, Peace and Social Justice » which will be held from 29 June to 2 July 2020, hosted by the International Institute of Social Studies (ISS) in The Hague. The triennial general conferences are the most prominent EADI events bringing together development researchers and practitioners from all over the world. We are already looking forward to a range of diverse and innovative formats which will enable participants to exchange ideas and engage in active discussions.
As usual, we have collected a bunch of publications, news, blogs and calls – this time with a focus on climate change due to the ongoing COP 24 in Poland. Enjoy the read!

Next EADI General Conference announced!
At our next General Conference, we would like to invite conference participants to reflect on any aspect of solidarity, peace, and social justice in their panels and papers. How can we give new meanings to solidarity in a period of growing distrust between and within nations and amongst people? How can we, as development scholars and practitioners, contribute to peace and social justice in our work? And how can we find new understandings and/or explanations to the concept of ‘development’ without simply adding new adjectives? Of course we will keep you informed on the conference calls, formats and programme, as the organisation further proceeds. Read more

« Global development? We have reached a cul-de-sac. The signs are obvious that development, as it was promoted since the last several centuries, basically since the era of enlightenment, is nothing that provides a sustainable future. We talk a lot about sustainability in the meantime, even global sustainability, but we are not walking the talk. We are not living up to that. I think, as concerned and committed scholars in EADI, we ought to critically reflect how we can address this ». In this brief interview EADI President Henning Melber explains why we need to challenge dominant paradigms of development and how EADI can contribute to this. Read more

« For a long time, many politicians have been arguing that developing countries need to grow their economies before they can afford to deliver social policy ». In « Social transfers: A Corner-Stone for Human, Economic and Political Development » Markus Loewe and Christoph Strupat from the German Development Institute (DIE) explain why social protection schemes are crucial particularly for low income countries and why and how they contribute to long term stability. Call for Papers: Ethics, Justice and Development Research
Ethics and justice are central to development issues, but at present, there are no dedicated ethical guidelines for development research. The DSA 2019 Conference « Opening up Development » is a good oopportunity to start changing this. EADI and DSA are jointly committed to producing such guidelines, and this panel will feed into that process. We look forward to receiving interesting contributions! Highlight: Mapping Just Transition(s) to a Low-Carbon World
Just Transition — the idea that justice and equity must form an integral part of the transition towards a low-carbon world — is increasingly being mobilized both to counter the idea that protecting the environment and protecting jobs are incompatible, and to broaden the debate to justice-related issues such as the kinds of jobs and societies we envision for the future. This report, by the Just Transition Research Collaborative, run jointly by the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) and Edouard Morena of the University of London Institute in Paris (ULIP), unpacks the different understandings, narratives and framings of Just Transition that underpin the concept’s growing popularity and uptake. Six short country case studies provide insights into how Just Transition is—or is not—being mobilized on the ground. The report suggests ways that Just Transition can inform policy discussions on the role of equity and justice in the shift towards a low-carbon world, and calls for a progressive interpretation of Just Transition to promote transformative change and climate justice for all. Featured EADI Member
The Swiss Commission for Research Partnerships with Developing Countries (KFPE)  promotes efficient, effective, and equitable research cooperation with low and middle income countries. It does so by providing conceptual and methodological support, ensuring the availability of adequate resources, and ensuring that the research is put to use. At the core of this work is the development and promotion of ethical and methodological foundations for research partnerships with poorer countries.
KFPE has recently produced the video « Out of Laboratories: Research Partnerships in a Changing World » which tells the story of transboundary research partnerships over the last decades and looks at important milestones for the future. Watch the video

« The climate is changing faster than we are — how do we speed up? » The Institute of Development Studies is partner of the new Rapid Transition Alliance (RTA) which was set up to collect and tell stories or rapid change in a warming world. Read more
The Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR) was part of a research consortium investigating the linkages between climate change initiatives and land grabs. It found that climate change politics have overlapped with each other and resulted in land grabs and conflict in which the rural poor lose access to natural resources. Read more
The Centre for Public Administration & Public Policies (CAPP) looks forward to applications for the Science and Technology Management Grant at the institute. The application is open for holders of a bachelor’s degree in any Social Science until 27 December. Read more
