68th Dies Natalis of ISS

On Thursday 8 October 2020, we celebrated our 68th Dies Natalis in a totally new form by hosting an online debate on three global crises: Covid-19, Climate change and Black Lives Matter. Over 500 people worldwide registered for the livestreamed debate hosted by journalist Marcia Luyten. The debate was a lively discussion between Aminata Cairo, Murat Arsel, Wendy Harcourt and rector Inge Hutter.

Event on labour conditions of migrant workers

On Thursday 8 October, Karin Astrid Siegmann and Julia Quaedvlieg held the hybrid event “Regulated Precarity: Migrant Workers in the Dutch Agricultural Sector”. During the event, an ISS study was presented, followed by a lively multi-stakeholder exchange on the findings and actions needed.

Kicking off on International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, the online conference “When Disaster Meets Conflict” was held 13-14 October. Key findings of the 5-year research project were shared and discussed in 3 closed working sessions and in a public webinar involving a multi-stakeholder panel. The project is led by Prof. Thea Hilhorst and funded by the Dutch Research Council.

Online PhD defence: Isabelle Desportes

On 5 November 2020, Isabelle Desportes will defend her PhD thesis ‘Repression Without Resistance: Disaster Responses in Authoritarian Low-Intensity Conflict Settings’. Her thesis confronts the uneasy relationship that disaster response actors have with politics and contributes to an improved understanding of the conflict–disaster nexus. The defence will take place entirely online.

3rd anniversary of ISS blog Bliss

Three years ago ISS started Bliss, the blog series in Global Development and Social Justice. So far, 245 posts have been published and 54,000 people have visited the blog. Readers come from more than 150 countries.

Alumni appointments

We are proud to share two recent appointments of ISS alumni: Dr Jose V. Camacho has been elected as Chancellor of the University of the Philippines, Los Baños. HE Bharat Raj Paudyal has been appointed as Foreign Secretary of the Government of Nepal. They graduated from ISS in 1995 resp. 2000.
