Editorial
Today we are happy to present our very first virtual dialogue in Spanish language, with more to come, also in French. This is a first step to help counter the dominance of English in the field, and an attempt to delve into the rich heritage of Spanish– and French-speaking thinkers. We are also very pleased that the International Master’s Programme at our premium member Noragric has received its EADI/IAC accreditation. Today’s blog posts critically analyses the underlying assumptions of the UNDP Human Development Reports, and our thematic focus today is on extractivism and natural resources. As usual, we’ve collected interesting online events by our members over the next  two weeks, in addition to the calls, vacancies and publication picks further below.

Why Read the Human Development Reports of the UNDP?
In this post Juan Telleria argues that the UNDP reports are « sheer example of the essentialist ontological assumptions that, for more than seven decades, conditioned and limited our understanding of development and global issues. » They help to « detect and expose the contradictions and limitations of current development debates » and can be interpreted as « a discursive instrument created for a very precise purpose: the rearticulation of the logics of development to adapt them to the needs of the new unipolar hegemony. » Read the post

Successful Accreditation Master’s Programme at Noragric
We are delighted to announce the successful accreditation of the « Master in Global Development Studies” at the Department of International Environment and Development Studies (Noragric),of  the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU) in Ås, near Oslo, Norway. The programme focuses on global social, political and economic change. The degree provides a critical understanding of the history and current dynamics of globalization, and its impact on societies and environments. The degree is organized as a full-time program over a 2-year period with 120 study points. All teaching is in English. Read more

Highlight: Risks and Prevention of Internal Conflicts
Open access book: The determinants of internal conflict in the world: How to estimate the risks and better target prevention efforts?
Recent years have seen an increase in the number and intensity of armed conflicts, fuelled in particular by an increase in the number and intensity of terrorist incidents and an increasingly important part played by organised crime. These conflicts are the result of a variety of economic, social, demographic, climatic and geographic factors. This book, based on a retrospective basis, makes it possible to identify the main factors that trigger conflicts and to distinguish between structural and non-structural factors. Read more
