Editorial |
It’s been quite a while since our last newsletter, and we take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and healthy new year despite all challenges! Our members have been very busy since then, and so we’ve got a lot to share today: on 19 January we invite you to our very first virtual event this year, and also recommend our brand-new blog post as food for thought. There’s a survey on ethics in development research going on, and the Joint European Doctorate we are part of is making progress. We found so many interesting member publications that we chose two thematic focuses toady, as well as two new open access books to recommend. And, last but not least, there are extraordinarily many vacancies available these days. Happy read! |
From our Blog: Post-Growth for Inclusive Development |
No inclusive development without a post-growth economy »Environmental degradation and social injustice are deeply enmeshed with the growth economy », argues Crelis Rammelt from the University of Amsterdam: « Applying green and inclusive lubricants to its mechanisms is not the solution. We must abandon growth itself. As development scholars, he concludes, « we must start by abandoning the growth doctrine and redefining #SDG8. Aggregate economic growth, even of the ‘green’ and ‘inclusive’ kind, is entangled with socio-ecological harm. Only when it frees itself from these entanglements can development hope to become socially, ecologically and relationally inclusive. » Read the post |
Next EADI Virtual Dialogue on 19 January! |
Mainstream development policies often promote citizens committees to oversee basic social services. Such committees require influence over, and legitimacy among, service providers and citizens to perform their roles, which local elites can help or hinder. Using a mixed-methods approach, this talk by Jean-Benoît Falisse from the University of Edinburgh will analyse the situation in 251 health facility committees in Burundi, part of which benefited from interventions designed to bolster their relationship with local leaders. Survey: Ethics in Development Research |
Some of our members are doing a survey on ethics in development research which will be open until February, and we invite everyone to take part and share the survey among colleagues as far and wide as possible! Participants can indicate potential ethical challenges they have encountered when working in research projects collecting primary data in low and middle income countries. These challenges might include, among others, inadequate working conditions, threats to physical safety and mental health as well as lack of scientific acknowledgement. The survey is part of a wider project on ethics in development research which aims at providing the scientific community with new evidence that can guide the development of normative ethical principles and standardized research guidelines. The ADAPTED Project is Taking Shape |
The European Joint Doctorate (EJD) ADAPTED Project we are part of is finally taking shape! 15 PhD students have been recruited to work with several international partners on validating pathways towards poverty eradication, analysing interactions between poverty reduction and other policy areas, and optimising the impact of poverty reduction policies. The aim is to to bridge the existing knowledge gap in understanding poverty dynamics and by equipping the early career researchers with a unique skills portfolio that is equally attractive for research institutions, development organisations and internationally active firms.
