EADI eNewsletter #9/1 2022 |  Supply Chains, Contested Sustainability & More

Welcome to the fortnightly newsletter of the European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI).
1st Issue September 2022

Editorial

Today we look forward to our very first regional meeting and PhD Symposium which will be taking place in Prague next week with a promising line-up of speakers. And we are happy to have received so many good panel proposals for our 2023 Lisbon conference, so watch this space for the related call for abstracts next month! And as usual, we’ve got a new blog post for you, this time with a focus on the root causes and possible implications of the global supply chain disruptions, some new open access article from the EJDR, and publication picks. And remember: jobs, calls, trainings and blogs are as always at the very bottom.

New on our Blog

What do the global supply chain disruptions tell us about the world economy?
Our latest blog post centres around two essential conclusions from the current situation of global supply chains: 1) COVID-19 is not the main cause of the global supply chain crisis, but rather a trigger for the disruption of an inherently fragile system. 2) the « new globalization » falls short of bringing a decentralization of power as claimed by many. Intan Suwandi who also features in episode three of our « Hierarchies of Development » podcast explores the reasoning behind this and doubts that « restructuring the global production system will lead to significant changes in terms of power relations within global commodity chains. » Read the post

Department of Management, Society and CommunicationMulti- and interdisciplinary by design, the Department of Management, Society and Communication brings together scholarship within management, communication and the broader social sciences and humanities, studying organisations in global environments and the interaction and interdependencies of business, society and government. Across research environments, much of MSC’s work revolves around the role and responsibilities of companies in the face of the grand challenges facing society. MSC had the lead in publishing today’s highlight « Contested Sustainability » More about MSC
Highlight: Contested Sustainbility
The Political Ecology of Conservation and Development in TanzaniaThis open access book by MSC considers how politics structure sustainability outcomes at multiple levels. It uncovers the complexity of partnerships that are crucial for achieving this, challenging its readers to interrogate these sustainability networks and their environmental and socio-economic outcomes. The contributors, from a range of disciplines, compare ‘more complex’ partnerships to relatively ‘simpler’, more traditional top-down and centralized management systems and to location where sustainability partnerships are not in place. Read more
