Welcome to the fortnightly newsletter of the European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI). |
3rd Issue March 2023EditorialWe are excited that season two of our « Hierarchies of Development » podcast has already so many listeners! If you haven’t caught up with it yet or would like to get back to season one, no problem: all episodes remain available on all standard platforms. We are also happy that our blog has come to be read so widely! And we would like to remind you that the EJDR call for special issue contributions on « Race, (Anti-)Racism and Development » is still open until 11 March. Apart from that, our thematic focus is on green economy today, and as always there are some more picks and highlights from our member community. |
The Global South and the return of geopolitics
« When opening a newspaper or looking at news websites in early 2023, it is obvious that we are witnessing the return of geopolitics », writes Wil Hout from the International Institute of Social Studies in our latest blog from the EADI/CEsA Lisbon conference series: « While current news reports pay much attention to the geopolitical dimensions of great power interactions, the return of geopolitics is certainly as relevant for countries across the Global South as for those in the Global North ». This applies particularly to Africa where it is uncertain whether the continent will be able to benefit from this increased attention. Read the post

Podcast Season 2: Listen To Another New Episode! |
Our latest podcast episode sheds the light on food and agrarian hierarchies. Podcast hosts Ingrid and Basile are joined by Maria Eugenia Giraudo from Durham University to discuss the political economy of soy in Latin America, the Argentinean national agrarian imaginary, and soy trade relationship between Latin American countries and China. And, of course, if you haven’t had the chance to listen to the previous episodes yet, they are all available on your favourite platform! Read more |
Another special issue of our journal, the European Journal of Development Research (EJDR) is out:
Under the title « Evaluating Complex Research for Development Programmes », the issue presents rich experiences of authors working across sectors and geographies, employing methodological innovation and navigating power as they reconcile tensions. They illustrate the challenges with (i) evaluating performance to meet accountability demands while fostering learning for adaptation; (ii) evaluating prospective theories of change while capturing emergent change; (iii) evaluating internal relational dimensions while measuring external development outcomes; (iv) evaluating across scales. Call extended to 15 April: Paris Doctoral Days (in French)
Together with some members in France, we are pleased to co-organise the doctoral days in Paris in October this year, aiming to promote synergies between young scholars in social sciences who contribute to critical research on development, both in the Global North and South. This year’s thematic focus is around the notion of « resilience », on the premise that different ways of understanding and/or criticizing « resilience » allow us to nourish a trans-disciplinary, critical debate on development. Highlight: Annual Lecture On Indigenous Perspectives |
Indigenous perspective on climate change, challenges and solutions: a decolonial learning journeyThis was the title of the annual lecture co-organised by two of our members in Norway: Ranjan Datta from Mount Royal University discussed the colonial history of climate change and the challenges it has created for indigenous communities. He also spoke about his use of indigenous methodology in research, which involves unlearning current methodological principles and relearning from the community’s perspective. Watch the lecture |
