| Mot de la direction | A message from the Director Au terme d’un mandat de quatre ans, je vais quitter la direction de l’IFAS-Recherche le 31 août et retrouver mon poste de professeure d’histoire contemporaine à l’université de Toulouse − Jean Jaurès. Ces quatre années à Johannesbourg ont été d’une incomparable richesse. Elles ont été l’occasion pour moi de découvrir le dense tissu scientifique de l’Afrique australe. Certes, il y a eu quelques bas durant les mois de confinement et de fermeture des frontières en 2020. Mais il y a eu essentiellement des hauts : de passionnants colloques et journées d’étude ; des visites de chantiers de fouilles archéologiques ; des publications en diverses langues ; et, surtout, des rencontres et des discussions avec des chercheuses et des chercheurs de tous horizons géographiques et disciplinaires. Annael Le Poullennec, nouvelle directrice, rejoindra l’UMIFRE dans quelques jours. Spécialiste du cinéma sud-africain, elle est également traductrice et interprète. Je lui souhaite autant de satisfactions dans ses nouvelles fonctions que celles que j’ai pu éprouver durant mon mandat. Elle saura renouveler les thématiques de recherche, y imprimer sa marque, y insuffler son énergie et conduire l’IFAS-Recherche sur de nouvelles pistes scientifiques. Je lui adresse tous mes vœux de réussite et d’épanouissement dans son nouveau poste. At the end of a four-year mandate, I will be leaving the direction of IFAS-Research on 31 August and will be returning to my position as Professor of History at the University of Toulouse − Jean Jaurès. These four years spent in Johannesburg have been incomparably fulfilling. They have given me the opportunity to discover the dense scientific networks in southern Africa. Of course, there were a few lows during the months of confinement and border closures in 2020. But for the most part there have been multiple highs: exciting conferences and workshops; visits to archaeological dig sites; publications in various languages; and, above all, meetings and conversations with researchers from diverse geographical and disciplinary backgrounds. Annael Le Poullennec, the new director, will be joining the UMIFRE in a few days’ time. A specialist in South African cinema, she is also a translator and interpreter. I wish her as much enjoyment in her new role as I experienced during my time in office. She will bring new insights on the research themes, put her own stamp on them, infuse her energy, and lead IFAS-Research down new scientific paths. I wish her every success and satisfaction in her new position. Sophie Dulucq Actualités de l’UMIFRE | Latest news Conférence-débat « Where does history lie? » et lancement du livre Welcome to Mitchell’s Plain: Filming a ‘Model Township’ during Apartheid, 17 août, Le Cap, Alliance Française du Cap ; 22 août, Mitchell’s Plain, Westridge Public Library « Where does history lie? » Joint talk and book launch (Welcome to Mitchell’s Plain: Filming a ‘Model Township’ during Apartheid), 17 August, Cape Town, Alliance Française du Cap; 22 August, Mitchell’s Plain, Westridge Public Library En partenariat avec l’Alliance Française du Cap et avec le soutien du Consulat de France, l’IFAS-Recherche a coorganisé deux conférences-débats à l’occasion du lancement du livre de Ludmila Ommundsen Pessoa consacré à l’histoire de Mitchell’s Plain, paru dans la collection numérique « AfricaE ». Organisées à l’Alliance française du Cap (17 août) et à la bibliothèque de Westridge de Mitchell’s Plain (22 août), ces deux sessions ont donné l’occasion à l’autrice et au journaliste Yazeed Kamaldien d’aborder non seulement l’histoire du célèbre township dans la propagande utilisée par le régime de l’apartheid, mais également les déplacements forcés des habitants du quartier de District Six. Un film de propagande de 1980 a été projeté en introduction, base à une réflexion collective sur les lieux et les mensonges de l’histoire — comme le reflète le titre ambivalent de la conférence : « Where does history lie? ».   © Marie Opplert Yazeed Kamaldien and Ludmila Ommundsen Pessoa at the Westridge Library © Aurélie Chauveau-Caron À l’Alliance Française du Cap, le cas du quartier de District Six, détruit par le régime d’apartheid au nom du Group Areas Act renforçant la ségrégation des zones résidentielles, a été longuement évoqué, avec les témoignages de personnes autoritairement déplacées — notamment vers Mitchell’s Plain, « township modèle » construit dans les années 1970. La presse locale a rendu compte de l’événement. L’événement tenu à la Westridge Public Library a accueilli un public chaleureux d’habitants de Mitchell’s Plain, qui ont débattu de l’histoire du township. Plusieurs personnes, après avoir visionné le film projeté par les conférenciers, ont évoqué leurs souvenirs du tournage de cette œuvre de propagande, analysée en profondeur dans l’ouvrage de Ludmila Ommundsen Pessoa. Celle-ci a par ailleurs offert des exemplaires imprimés du livre à plusieurs établissements scolaires de Mitchell’s Plain. Ils sera à la disposition des enseignants et pourra servir de base à divers projets pédagogiques menés avec les élèves.  The book is donated by the author to the Mondale High School library © Ludmila Ommundsen Pessoa In collaboration with the Alliance Française du Cap and with the support of the French Consulate, IFAS-Research co-organised two joint talks to mark the launch of Ludmila Ommundsen Pessoa’s book on the history of Mitchell’s Plain, which was published in the AfricaE digital collection. Held at the Alliance Française in Cape Town (17 August) and at the Westridge Library in Mitchell’s Plain (22 August), these two sessions gave Ludmila Ommundsen Pessoa and the journalist Yazeed Kamaldien the opportunity to shed light on the history of this famous township, and its instrumentalization by the apartheid regime propaganda. They also discussed the forced displacement of the District Six residents. A 1980 propaganda film was shown as an introduction, providing the basis for a collective reflection on the limits and untruthfulness of history — as reflected in the ambivalent conference title: « Where does history lie?”. At the Alliance française du Cap, the case of District Six, a neighbourhood destroyed by the apartheid regime under the Group Areas Act reinforcing residential segregation, was discussed at length, with testimonies from people who had been forcibly displaced — most notably to Mitchell’s Plain, the so-called « model township » built in the 1970s. The local press reported on the event. The event held at the Westridge Public Library was well attended by Mitchell’s Plain residents, who debated the history of their neighbourhood. After watching the film presented by the lecturers, some members of the audience shared their recollections about the shooting of this propaganda film which is analysed in depth in the book. Ludmila Ommundsen Pessoa also donated hard copies of the book to several schools in Mitchell’s Plain. They will be available to teachers and can be used as a starting point for various educational projects with students. Son étude porte sur les modalités d’adaptation à leur environnement des chasseurs-collecteurs dans le bassin du Kalahari entre 130 000 et 74 000 BP. Le second porte sur le terrain de recherche de Margot Luyckfasseel, chercheuse postdoctorale au département d’histoire de l’université de Gand. Elle étudie l’histoire des personnes esclavagisées et de leurs descendants, des années 1900 à nos jours, dans la province de Tshopo (actuelle République Démocratique du Congo).
