| 3rd Issue May 2024 Editorial Just back from our Regional Meeting and PhD Symposium for Germany which saw extraordinarily good discussions and helped people connect, we’d like to draw your attention to the DSAI summer school which has just started and will be reflecting on decolonising research and development through an indigenous and feminist critical lens. How Austria’s Development Cooperation has, so far, Dodged the Populist Bullet Austria plays an unassuming midfield position in international development cooperation: stable institutions, a stagnant budget, incremental policy change and a multilateralist orientation. Taking a step back, such ‘aid business as usual’ is surprising. Why, despite tumultuous domestic political change and a strong political influence of right-wing populism, has Austria’s development cooperation remained shielded from politicisation? Read more Swedish Aid Cuts Dent ‘Decades of Work’ in Global South Cuts to Sweden’s overseas aid budget have undermined decades of work building research partnerships in the global South, according to researchers. The Swedish government more than halved its overseas aid budget in 2023 and this was followed by stringent cuts to development research funding. Read more See all forthcoming events Highlight: Social Protection in Latin America Causality, Stratification and Outcomes This open access book by Global Development Institute’s Armando Barrientos offers a comprehensive analysis of social protection in Latin America, its origins, institutions, and outcomes. The chapters are organised in three groups. The earlier chapters discuss in turn appropriate methods, an analytical framework, and core institutions. The book advocates a causal inference approach to the study of the institutions that have dominated social protection in the region: occupational insurance, individual retirement savings, and social assistance. Read more Highlight: Dev. Policies in Central & Eastern Europe International development policies in Central and Eastern Europe since EU accession: increasing divergence? This paper discusses how the international development policies of four Central and Eastern European countries evolved driven by pressure from the EU. The policies put in place were underfunded and received little political attention, resulting in functionally similar approaches. In the past 10 years however, these policies began to diverge in practices and motivations. The paper provides a comparative analysis of the four policies, focusing on strategies, aid volumes and allocation.
