L’IFAS-Recherche se réjouit de vous inviter à sa prochaine journée d’étude, le vendredi 27 septembre, « From the Pleistocene into the Holocene: renewed archaeological studies at the transition in southern Africa », menée par Aurore Val (Université Aix-Marseille & Université du Witwatersrand). Le 11 juillet dernier, l’IFAS-Recherche, la doctorante et allocataire 2024 Indiana Lods (Univ. de Bourgogne) et Alan Muller (Univ. de Pretoria) ont organisé un séminaire intitulé « les Arts Spéculatifs d’Afrique du Sud : création, circulation et réception », modéré par Annael Le Poullennec (IFAS-Recherche) et Lawrence Lemaoana (Occupy the Gallery). L’événement a rassemblé des universitaires, des écrivain·es, des artistes, des libraires, des agents littéraires ou encore des curateur·ices. Les participant·es de disciplines et d’horizons divers ont échangé autour de la notion même d’« Arts Spéculatifs » dans un contexte sud-africain, d’une coexistence entre le passé, le présent et le futur dans la temporalité des œuvres d’arts spéculatifs, ou encore de la tension méthodologique entre créativité artistique et recherche universitaire. Ces échanges se sont conclus sur le souhait général de poursuivre la discussion lors de futurs événements. À suivre !

On the 11th of July, IFAS-Research, together with 2024 grantee Indiana Lods (Univ. of Bourgogne) and Alan Muller (Univ. of Pretoria) hosted a workshop entitled “South African Speculative Arts: Creation, Circulation and Reception”, moderated by Annael Le Poullennec (IFAS-Research) and Lawrence Lemaoana (Occupy the Gallery). This event brought together scholars, writers, visual artists, booksellers, literary agents, and curators. Participants from diverse backgrounds and disciplines discussed the notion of “Speculative Arts” in a South African context, the coexistence between past, present and future in the temporality of speculative artistic productions, and the methodological tension between artistic creativity and academic research. The roundtable concluded on a shared desire among all participants to further discussions at future events. To be continued!

The 7th issue of the academic journal Sources consists of five articles written by authors from universities in Africa (Kenya, Nigeria, Guinea) and France, from a range of different disciplines (history, theatre studies, political science, and geography), using various methodologies and materials (ethnographic immersion and observations, interviews, archival research, and digital tools). The issue provides original and polyphonic reflections on the conditions of African fieldwork, from Tanzania to Angola, Guinea, Kenya, and Nigeria

Matériaux & terrain en études africaines, « Aux sources de la folie », n° 8 | Sources. Materials and Fieldwork in African Studies, “Sources of Madness”, n°8Le 8e numéro de la revue Sources, « Aux sources de la folie », croise six articles d’historien·nes et d’anthropologues pour faire entendre le quotidien de la folie. À travers des archives institutionnelles et personnelles, des entretiens et témoignages, des observations et photographies, mais aussi des absences et des refus, les contributions proposent un parcours allant de l’Afrique occidentale française à l’Algérie, au Gabon et au Ghana contemporains, en passant par l’Algérie coloniale et la Haute Volta des années 1970. Le numéro donne ainsi à voir une pluralité de dispositifs (médicaux, judiciaires, religieux ou rituels), de connaissances et d’espaces de prise en charge de la folie afin de rendre compte de la complexité des parcours de vie.

The 8th issue of the academic journal Sources, “Sources of Madness”, brings together historians and anthropologists to explore the daily realities of madness under and in the aftermath of colonialism. Drawing on institutional and personal archives, interviews and testimonies, observations and photographs, but also tackling absence and refusal, the six articles span French West Africa and contemporary Algeria, Gabon and Ghana, as well as colonial Algeria and the Upper Volta in the 1970s. The issue thus highlights the intersection of various apparatuses (medical, judicial, religious or ritual), bodies of knowledge and spaces dealing with madness, in order to capture the complexity of life trajectories

Nos appels | Our callsProgramme de chercheur·ses invité·es IMAF-UMIFRE Afrique 2025 |  IMAF-UMIFRE Africa Visiting Research Program 2025Le programme des chercheur·ses invité·es IMAF-UMIFRE Afrique, fruit de la collaboration entre l’Institut des mondes africains et les quatre UMIFRE d’Afrique subsaharienne, permet le soutien à la mobilité de chercheur·ses sud-africain·es vers l’IMAF Aubervilliers ou l’IMAF Aix-en-Provence. Le programme a pour finalité de favoriser le dialogue scientifique entre les membres de l’IMAF et ces invité·es, de contribuer au développement de réseaux internationaux et de renforcer le partenariat tripartite entre IMAF, UMIFRE et universités africaines. 
À la suite d’un désistement, il est possible de candidater pour une mobilité entrante d’un mois pour le dernier trimestre 2024. Les candidatures pour une mobilité en 2025 sont par ailleurs ouvertes. N’hésitez pas à nous contacter pour plus de renseignements. 

The IMAF-UMIFRE Africa Visiting Researcher Programme, a result of the collaboration between the Institut des mondes africains (IMAF) and the four UMIFREs in sub-Saharan Africa, supports the mobility of South African researchers to IMAF Aubervilliers or IMAF Aix-en-Provence. The aim of the programme is to foster scientific dialogue between IMAF researchers and these guests, to contribute to the development of international networks and to strengthen the tripartite partnerships between IMAF, UMIFRE and African universities. Following a withdrawal, it is still possible to apply for a 1-month mobility program from France to South Africa during the last semester of 2024. Additionally, applications for a mobility in 2025 are now open.

Applications are for students who intend to start their studies in France in September 2025 (due to the calendars’ differences, laureates will follow a specific programme from February to July 2025). Applications are open until October 14 2024.

Programme de Mobilités croisées 2025 (in French)L’Ambassade de France à Prétoria annonce l’ouverture du programme de Mobilités croisées 2025, porté par le ministère de l’Europe et des Affaires étrangères (MEAÉ). L’Afrique du Sud, le Lesotho et le Malawi sont éligibles. Ce programme vise à promouvoir l’échange d’étudiant·es entre des établissements d’enseignement supérieur africains et français, afin de renforcer les mobilités et partenariats universitaires et de créer des réseaux d’alumnis via des formations communes. Les établissements français, en lien avec leurs partenaires sud-africains, déposeront leurs dossiers de candidatures dès que possible et jusqu’au 25 septembre 2024 en complétant le formulaire téléchargeable à ce lien.

(Axe 1 : Arts, industries de la culture, création ; Axe 2 : Corps, santé et société ; Axe 3 : Transitions, régulations, innovations ; Axe 4 : Penser la ville contemporaine).

Appel à projets du CNRS pour les International Emerging Action | Launch of the CNRS’s International Emerging Actions call for projects Le CNRS lance sa campagne d’appels à IEA (International Emerging Actions), qui s’adresse aux agents rattaché·es à une unité du CNRS. Elle vise à soutenir l’organisation, sur 2 ans, de missions de courte durée, de réunions de travail et de premiers travaux dont le but est d’explorer de nouveaux champs de recherche et de nouveaux partenariats à l’international. Les candidatures sont ouvertes jusqu’au 30 septembre 2024via la plateforme NOA du CNRS.

CNRS is launching its International Emerging Actions call for projects, which is aimed at staff carrying out research in a CNRS unit. The call’s objective is to support the organisation, over 2 years, of short missions, working meetings and initial joint research work to explore new fields of research and new international partnerships. The call for applications is open until September 30 2024 via the CNRS NOA platform.

The FMSH is opening its mobility program for professors and senior researchers from all continents to come and carry out their research (fieldwork, library, and archival work) in France for periods of 4 to 6 weeks. Find eligibility criteria and call here until 29 November. CDD de 9 mois Responsable d’enquête et d’édition pour le projet CASSAF | 9 months postdoctoral contract for the CASSAF projectDans le cadre du projet CASSAF (Créations Arts-Sciences Sociales en études AFricaines), le GIS Etude Africaines recrute un·e responsable d’enquête et d’édition en CDD de 9 mois, à partir du 1ernovembre 2024, basé·e sur le campus de Condorcet (Aubervilliers). En collaboration avec le comité de pilotage du projet, le ou la responsable d’enquête sera chargé·e de concevoir et de réaliser un état des lieux des approches individuelles ou collectives en études africaines associant méthodes de sciences humaines et sociales et démarches artistiques. 
L’offre d’emploi est ouverte jusqu’au dimanche 08 septembre 2024 et s’adresse prioritairement aux titulaires d’un doctorat depuis moins de 3 ans.

As part of the CASSAF project (Créations Arts-Sciences Sociales en études AFricaines in French), the GIS “African Studies” is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher for a 9-month contract, starting on the 1stof November 2024 and based in the Condorcet campus (Aubervilliers, France). In collaboration with the steering committee, the postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for assessing individual and collective approaches associating artistic processes and research methodologies in the human and social sciences in African studies. The call for applications is open until Sunday 08 September 2024 and is primarily aimed at individuals who have obtained a PhD within the last 3 years. Contrat doctoral CNRS-IMAF en science politique sur la socialisation politique en situation autoritaire | Doctoral contract CNRS-IMAF in political science on political socialisation in authoritarian situationsDans le cadre d’un projet de recherche sur la socialisation politique en situation autoritaire, l’Institut des mondes africains (IMAF-UMR 8171, Aubervilliers) et le CNRS proposent un contrat doctoral de trois ans encadré par Marie-Emmanuelle Pommerolle et débutant le 1er décembre 2024. As part of a research project on political socialisation in authoritarian situations, the Institut des mondes africains (IMAF-UMR 8171, Aubervilliers) and the CNRS are offering three years doctoral contract supervised by Marie-Emmanuelle Pommerolle, starting from the 1st of December, 2024. The project has three main strands: 1) ordinary socialisation in authoritarian contexts, 2) family transmission in an activist context, and 3) socialising events. The doctoral candidate is free to propose any research subject or question that fits in with these issues. The empirical core of the project is in Cameroon. However, the doctoral student is invited to propose a topic relating to another context in order to encourage comparative dialogue within the project.

Soutien à la jeune recherche en islamologie (in French)Le Ministère de l’Europe et des Affaires Étrangères et le réseau des UMIFRE soutient la jeune recherche en islamologie en proposant des bourses de terrain d’une durée de six mois à destination de doctorant·es et jeunes docteur·es poursuivant des recherches dans ce domaine. The African Chronometric Dating Fund (ACDF), an initiative launched in 2022, encourages applications from African researchers and students wishing to improve the regional chronologies established by radiocarbon dating. Ce numéro vise à promouvoir la visibilité des doctorant·es et jeunes chercheur·ses en sciences humaines et sociales. Cet appel encourage une approche multidisciplinaire et pluraliste des réalités africaines, englobant également les espaces océaniques et les réseaux diasporiques. Les propositions de numéros doivent être soumisesavant le 1er octobre 2024, avec une évaluation et une publication prévues pour les années suivantes.

The editorial and scientific committee of Cahiers Afriques is calling for the coordination of a thematic issue dedicated to Africa, to be published in 2026-27. The aim of this issue is to promote the visibility of doctoral students and young researchers in the humanities and social sciences. This call encourages a multidisciplinary and pluralist approach to African realities, including oceanic spaces and diasporic networks. The 2nd Southern African Mountain Conference, “Overcoming Boundaries and Barriers”, will take place at the Champagne Sports Resort, in the Maloti-Drakensberg, from 17 to 20 March 2025. The call for proposals invites abstracts, panel discussions, workshops, roundtables, linked to various themes such as agriculture, biodiversity, rural communities, energy and resources, geoscience and landscape, history, cultural heritage, governance, tourism, social justice, etc. The call is open until September 16, 2024. Find all the information on the event’s website.
