| NEW REPORT BENCHMARKING THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE OF THE EU SOCIAL ECONOMY – IMPROVING THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE PROXIMITY AND SOCIAL ECONOMY ECOSYSTEM – 2024  Report prepared for the European Commission: European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA). Study which updates the figures on the economic presence and the representation of social economy and social enterprises in the EU and its 27 Member States. At least 11.5 million people – 6.3% of the employed population – are occupied in the social economy. Across the 27 Member States, the social economy includes more than 4.3 million entities. 97.7% of the 4.3 million entities belong to one of the four families that traditionally make up the social economy: cooperatives, mutualities, associations and foundations. The report underlines also that there are social economy organisations in all EU countries, though some operate outside the radar. What changes across EU Member States is how much such entities are acknowledged by policymakers, the general public and grassroots organisations – and recognise themselves – as part of the social economy. The study also has specific features showing the effects of COVID-19 on the social economy as well as how social economy features in a series of Industrial Ecosystems (agri-food, cultural and creative industries, energyrenewables, health, retail and tourism).
