IFAS-Research conference – October 17th: « Conversation about Chris McGregor’s music »  Le jeudi 17 octobre, de 14h30 à 16h30, l’IFAS-Recherche vous invite à une présentation du chercheur Denis-Constant Martin (LAM, Sciences Po Bordeaux), suivie d’une discussion avec le musicien Mandla Mlangeni, autour de Chris McGregor, pianiste, arrangeur, compositeur et chef d’orchestre qui joua un rôle important dans le jazz moderne sud-africain de la fin des années 1950 jusqu’en 1964, lorsqu’il s’exila volontairement avec un groupe nommé les Blue Notes. Cette conversation tentera de montrer comment ses conceptions musicales se sont développées à partir de plusieurs sources (musiques rurales du Transkei, hymnes protestantes, musique « classique », jazz) et comment il a su combiner ces influences pour créer un langage musical original, notamment au sein du mouvement du free jazz ou dans la composition et l’arrangement de grandes formations. On Thursday, October 17th, from 2:30pm to 4:30pm, IFAS-Research cordially invites you to a presentation by Prof Denis-Constant Martin (LAM, Sciences Po Bordeaux, France), followed by a discussion with musician Mlandla Mlangeni. It will focus on Chris McGregor, a pianist, arranger, composer and band leader who played an important role in South African modern jazz from the late 1950s till 1964 when he went into self-exile with a combo named the Blue Notes. It will attempt to show how his musical conceptions developed from several sources (rural musics from Transkei, protestant hymns, western “classical”, jazz) and how he combined these influences to create an original musical language, especially in the free jazz movement and in composing and arranging for big bands. IFAS-Research & Wits History Workshop – November 1-3: Workshop on public history and community archives in Africa L’histoire publique a connu au cours de la dernière décennie une croissance impressionnante à l’échelle internationale, comme en témoigne la multiplication des programmes universitaires à ce sujet, notamment en Amérique du Nord et en Europe, ainsi qu’en Asie et en Amérique latine plus récemment. En revanche, cette tendance semble moins toucher le continent africain. Un atelier réunissant des historien·nes, basé·es à l’université ou dans des communautés, aura lieu à Johannesburg afin d’évaluer l’état de l’histoire publique et de réfléchir à la manière de soutenir son développement sur le continent. L’IFAS-Recherche est fier d’être partenaire et soutien de l’événement. L’atelier, dirigé par Noor Nieftagodien (Wits History Workshop), se déroulera sur trois jours, du 1er au 3 novembre 2024, à l’Université du Witwatersrand et à l’Afrikan Freedom Station. Le dernier jour comprendra des visites des sites des partenaires communautaires du Soweto History and Archives Project. Public history has over the past decade experienced impressive growth internationally, reflected in the proliferation of graduate programmes at universities, especially in North America and Europe, with new developments in Asia and Latin America. There seems to be little evidence of similar trends on the African continent. A workshop of public historians based at universities and in communities is to take place in Johannesburg, so as to assess the state of public history and consider how to support its development on the continent. IFAS-Research is a proud partner and supporter of the event. The workshop, led by Noor Nieftagodien (Wits History Workshop), will take place over three days from November 1 to 3, 2024 and will convene at Wits University and the Afrikan Freedom Station. The final day will involve visits to sites of the community partners of the Soweto History and Archives Project. The aim is to take stock of the publication practices of African scientists and the publishing ecosystem on the African continent, and to identify the levers for improvement.
