Back from our research communications workshop in Paris, we find that the role of communications in research cannot be overestimated, and are therefore very happy to offer an online blogging workshop open for everyone. As an appetizer, we’ve got two new blog posts for you today: one pointing to colonialism as elephant in the room of the climate change discourse, and the other warning of the growing securitisation of European development policy. And: a project we’re involved in is coming to a close and is inviting to its final conference end of November. |
From our Blog |
Colonialism’s Blind Spot in Climate Change Solutions: Why Feminist Approaches Are Falling Short »Despite its role as a key driver of climate change through centuries of extractivist activities, economic expansion, and the dominance of Western ways of knowing, coloniality is frequently overlooked in mainstream environmental debates », writes Bernadette P. Resurrección in our latest blog: » Coloniality, capitalism, racism, and heteropatriarchy all overlap and reinforce one another, creating a web of exploitation that affects both people and the planet. Addressing the climate crisis, therefore, requires tackling these systems together, rather than in isolation » Read the post |
EU Development Policy in the Security Trap »The new EU Commission is forcing EU development policy under the yoke of its security strategy », writes OEFSE Director Werner Raza in his analysis: « By overestimating its global negotiating power, it risks not only to harm Europe’s long-term interests, but to exacerbate geopolitical tensions. » He concludes: » « Without a willingness to cooperate as equal partners and to make amends for colonial crimes and climate damage, Europe will find it difficult to forge constructive relations with the Global South. Given the current political agenda of the new Commission, it will unfortunately take some more time before this realization becomes the guiding principle of politics » Read the post |

Between Hope and Disillusion: How Young People in Africa and Europe Shape Politics in a Crisis-Ridden WorldThis year’s Megatrend Lecture asks: How do young people act and engage in an era of upheaval? How does the political establishment address young peoples’ concerns, especially in Africa, where young people constitute the biggest electoral group? Are we witnessing new forms of lasting political engagement, or do we enter an age of disillusion? Read more and register until 25 October |
ADAPTED Final Conference, 25-28 November 2024 |
We are proud to be partner in the ADAPTED project, a European joint doctorate around ending poverty worldwide as the overarching goal of the SDGs. Results of the research activities between 2021 and 2024 will be discussed during the final conference in in Cape Town, South Africa. Interested researchers and practitioners are invited to participate in the SDG Forum on 26 November 2024 (online or in person) and / or in the Dissemination Day on 28 November 2024 (in person). Highlight: Decolonising Economic Development |
The Role of Development SectorResearchers from our members at King’s and SOAS in London have compiled this report for BOND, the UK network for organisations working in international development. The report lays out what a framework for decolonisation entails, building on anti-colonial, post-colonial and anti-imperialist scholarship, primarily originating in lower-income countries. It suggests that a Eurocentric approach to economic development ignores the common historical processes that produce both the markers of development and aspects of underdevelopment on a global and national scale.
