3rd Issue October 2024 Editorial Next week we will be heading to the EADI Directors’ Meeting in Krakow, Poland, where we will once again have the opportunity to deepen our discussions about the scope and future of Development Studies. At the same time, we are busy with our « Decolonising Knowledge for Development » project where we will share the first stories very soon. From our blog we’ve got two new posts today: one exploring why cocoa farmers in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire haven’t benefitted from the recent price-hike, the other assessing the EU Sustainable Finance Strategy. And, of course, the usual picks, opportunities and opinions from us and our community. From our Blog Cocoa Prices Triple, But Do Farmers Feel the Gains? Recently, cocoa prices surged at the global derivative markets, which serve as a benchmark for the sales of West African cocoa beans. Yet, farmers in Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire have seen a relatively minor increase in the price they receive. Our latest blog post analyses the reasons behind this and proposes possible ways forward: « Producer-coordinated price systems could be an alternative if they become broader in scope including cocoa producers in West Africa as well as Asia and Latin America » Read the post EU Sustainable Finance Strategy: Proposals for Reform and Extension « The EU has set itself the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% from 1990 levels by 2030 and becoming climate-neutral by 2050. Currently, financial markets are clearly not aligned with this goal », write the authors of this blog. « If the EU Commission is still honestly committed to the climate and sustainability goals that it has set itself (…), it will have to be ambitious in its sustainable finance policies ».
