Editorial

Today we can offer you a few more reflections around decolonising the field: two new blog posts approach the topic from a personal and methodological angle, a podcast discusses evaluation, and one of our highlights includes a toolkit for researchers. Yet another episode of our « Hierarchies of Development » podcast is out, and we are pleased to invite you to this working group webinar on 26 February, Our thematic focus is on food today, apart from the usual picks, training opportunities, calls and vacancies further below. From our Blog What Challenges for Global Development Research are Posed by a More Decolonial Approach?  In this post, Laura Camfield from King’s College, London, explores colonial continuities in research methods and examines the potential of decolonial alternatives, acknowledging the challenges posed by existing power dynamics within the field: « While decolonial research shares some common ground with participatory approaches, including its vulnerability to co-option, if taken seriously, it challenges the entire ecosystem of development research. » Read more

Learning and Unlearning: Sowing the Seeds of a Decolonising Mindset In this very personal story, IDS Director Peter Taylor tells us how being an agriculture teacher in Botswana shaped his perception of development and further work: « Engaging with the knowledge and experience of those I worked with, not only influenced my own approaches within this broad field of development. They also encouraged me more recently to engage with debates on development and coloniality, especially around intellectual ‘decolonisation’ or decolonising knowledge. » Read more
