| We are pleased to support the 8th PhD Conference on International Development. This is a student-led event, organized by PhD students from the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) and the School of Global studies at the University of Sussex (UK). In collaboration with a number of institutions in Europe, it brings together current or recently graduated doctoral researchers in development studies and related disciplines. This conference is an opportunity for doctoral students to present to a larger audience to get critical and well-informed feedback. Read more |

| « More humility about what we think is good » is one of the conclusions resaearchers from the Oxford Poverty & Human Development Initiative (OPHI) took from the revision of the Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI). This « also meant that value judgments and decisions had to be taken that will not sit well with everyone. Despite its wide use and recognition, the global MPI has never been without its critics – and this critical engagement helps motivate us to use the available indicators that best capture acute poverty. » Read more

| The International Center for Development and Decent Work (ICDD) is a global multidisciplinary network of eight partner universities on four continents with its head office at the University of Kassel (Germany). It cooperates closely with the International Labour Organization (ILO) and various non-governmental organizations. The ICDD contributes to the global fight against hunger and poverty through research and education on the Sustainable Development Goal #8 to promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all. A special focus lies thereby on the world’s 805 million people living in rural areas who face food insecurity. |

| ICDD’s latest working paper on care extractivism analyses the current national and transnational reconfiguration of social and biological reproduction in Germany / Western Europe interacting with Eastern Europe and Asia. The contradiction between the rationale of care and the neoliberal capitalist market logic results in frequent care struggles such as the protests of hospital nurses against the depletion of care resources. The politisation of care by the protesting care workers asks for giving preference to the care economy as a common good over care as a commodity. Read more |

| On the occasion of the recent release of the IPBES Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, we’d like to highlight this issue paper by the International Institute for Environment and Development (IEED): « This global biodiversity crisis is hitting the poorest communities first and hardest, because they can ill-afford to ‘buy in’ biodiversity’s previously-free goods and services (and are already bearing the brunt of climate change).So why does the development community often ignore biodiversity loss?
