EADI eNewsletter #5/1 2021 | Research-Practice Nexus, Post-Neoliberal Development & More

1st Issue May 2021

Editorial

Today we are proud to announce our new paper on the research – practice nexus, as well as a MOOC on Global Citizenship Education developed together with Bridge 47 family and the International Cooperation Centre. Our Journal, the EJDR, has launched an open-access series on the themes Solidarity, Peace, and Social Justice in line with the upcoming EADI/ISS conference in July, and the authors of our latest blog post share their ideas on embracing a post-neoliberal development after COVID-19. Last but not least we would like to remind our French speaking community of our virtual dialogue next week and share some publication picks, online activities, calls and vacancies. Today’s thematic focus is on biodiversity and environmental protection.
From our Blog: 5 Pillars for Post-Neoliberal Development
How Not To Go ‘Back To Normal’ After COVID-19
« Given this deep rupture to pre-COVID-19 business-as-usual and the severe adjustments that continue to be made, it is clear that we will not get ‘back to normal’ any time soon, if ever. Nor indeed should we. But how not to go back to normal? » The authors of this post outline five pillars to overcome the neoliberal development path: 1) reorientation of priorities away from generalized economic growth, 2) scaling up redistribution, locally and globally, whilst respecting principles of autonomy and self-determination, 3) transformation towards regenerative agriculture and convivial conservation, 4) reduction of consumption and travel, 5) debt cancellation. New EADI Paper on Research-Practice Nexus
Roles, processes and risks within the  research – practice nexus:  Perspectives from academia
by Sonja Keller und Katja Bender (Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg, University of Applied Sciences)
This explorative study  conducted between October 2019 and July 2020 aimed to assess from the perspective of academia facets of cooperation between development research and practice. This included identifying main groups of non-academic actors involved, analysing motivations as well as enabling or disabling factors, and exploring ethical challenges of research-practice collaboration in development research. EJDR Series on Solidarity, Peace, and Social Justice
In the run-up to the EADI/ISS Conference in July our Journal, the European Journal of Development Research has launched a series on the three main conference themes, opening this month with an online collection on Peace. Each month five papers related to the conference themes will be free-to-view on EJDR’s website. There’s also a whole new issue available, including three open access articles. As usual, more new open access articles are available here. And please remember: an EADI membership comes with free access to the EJDR!
Bridge 47: MOOC and Paper on Global Citizenship Education
As part of our engagement in the Bridge 47 Project we were able to develop a massive open online course (MOOC) introducing the concept of Global Citizenship Education (GCE). It covers the basic concepts, the approaches, and the possible applications of GCE. The course is free and open to learners from all over the world with an interest in the topic. It is structured in nine Modules which are convened by academics and practitioners and the coordinators of the Knowledge Exchange Partnerships of Bridge 47. Read more

EADI took the leading role in the work on Knowledge Exchange Partnerships whose results are now presented in this paper

Covid-19: Should intellectual property rights be challenged?
This policy brief by the Fondation pour les Etudes et Recherches sur le Développement International (FERDI) highlights the value of intellectual property pooling instruments such as the Medicines Patent Pool for the management of the Covid-19 health crisis by the international community.
