 2nd Issue June 2021 Editorial This is our last newsletter before the upcoming EADI/ISS conference, and we look forward to listening to new perspectives, research insights and discussions all around the topics of Solidarity, Peace, and Social Justice! If you feel inspired by the conference programme and would still like to register, you can do so here. We have done our best to put together a rich programme and make the most of the online format. Further to the public Dudley Seers Lecture on July, our programme contains a range of other pre-conference formats, such as the workshop « From abstract to vlog » on 2 July to learn how to exploit the power of video and storytelling to effectively communicate your research. How Online Conferences Can Contribute to Social Justice « Let us be honest to you from the beginning: we have never organized an online conference before. We feel like we are inventing the wheel in many ways, because many things are absolutely new to us. We’ve never had to do this. But now that we have organized the #Solidarity2021 conference which is to start in just a few days, we know one thing for sure: we will never organize a conference again without providing substantial online participation facilities. » Read on our blog how the process of shifting the conference online inspired the organizing team to new ideas and attracted more participants from the Global South than any EADI conference before. In the early 1970s, economist Barbara Ward and fellow visionaries introduced a new concept: that the interests of people and planet are inextricably interlinked. Today, their proposition is an accepted global narrative and at the heart of the 2015 Sustainable Development Goals. IIED’s mission is to build a fairer, more sustainable world, using evidence, action and influence, working in partnership with others. Read more Highlight: Better cities after COVID-19 in the Global South This brand new IIED paper proposes a novel framework to support a transformative recovery in cities of the global South. COVID-19 has created a critical juncture in the development of cities in the global South. Local governments and grassroots organisations have led urban responses that have been pivotal in shaping the pandemic’s outcomes for low-income residents. Yet policymakers have had only a limited focus on the pandemic’s urban dimensions. Synthesising evidence on the pandemic’s impacts in urban areas, this issue paper outlines a set of policy priorities and develops a framework with guiding principles for co-creating inclusive, forward-looking pathways out of the crisis.
