| 1st Issue August 2021 Editorial Today we are happy to present our Annual Report for 2020 which shows that we have been anything but idle over the last year, despite the constraints posed by the pandemic: with more than 20 public (virtual) events, a publication on the research-practice nexus, 33 blog posts, the accreditation of a master’s programme in Global Development Studies, two statements, the engagement in two projects and many working group activities we look back on a challenging and busy year. More forward-looking, we’ve put together some reading and watching recommendations as usual: our latest blog post offers an analysis of the EU Conflict Minerals Regulation, the recordings of the plenary sessions from our recent #Solidarity2021 conference are now available on our YouTube channel, and our premium member DIE has also produced some interesting new material. Apart from the recurring vacancy announcements, publication picks, calls and opinion pieces, today’s thematic focus is on forests. From our Blog: The EU Conflict Minerals Regulation The EU Conflict Minerals Regulation – a trial run for responsible sourcing of raw materials? « On 1 January 2021 the EU Conflict Minerals Regulation entered into force. From now on, companies importing certain minerals into the EU must ensure that their sourcing practices do not contribute to conflict and human rights abuses. The regulation therefore introduces for the first time mandatory human rights due diligence for companies in the EU. In its current version, the scope of the regulation is extremely limited. Nevertheless, its implementation can provide important lessons for the upcoming comprehensive EU due diligence legislation. », writes Karin Küblböck from the Austrian Foundation for Development Research. And, last but not least, our values, because development, if taken seriously, is a value-based matter and requires us to take a stand, as EADI President Henning Melber emphasizes in his introductory message. In case you have not attended our recent #Solidarity2021 conference, it’s worth watching the recordings of the plenary sessions: the opening plenary discussed how the Covid pandemic affected Global Solidarity, and how the practice of solidarity has changed our view on global transformations. Watch the video or read the discussion summary on our blog Bridge 47: Partnerships for Sustainable Development During its work, the Bridge 47 Project for Global Citizenship Education (GCE) has built many partnerships based on the belief that truly transformative education must step out of the comfort zone and connect with new stakeholders. The dedicatedpartnership website harvests the learning from these partnerships in publications, videos, case studies and other resources to inspire and build the capacity of others and to contribute to a wider reflection, dialogue and knowledge sharing within the GCE sector globally about the opportunities and challenges for advancing the mission of GCE through cross-sector partnerships. Read more Featured EADI Member: German Development Institute The German Development Institute, Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE)is one of the leading research institutions and think tanks for global development and international cooperation worldwide. It is located in the UN City of Bonn. DIE’s work is based on the interplay between Research, Policy Advice and Training. DIE is building bridges between theory and practice. Together with the International Trade Centre, the Institute has produced a brief video which provides key policy recommendations on how Investment Facilitation for Development agreement of the WTO can contribute to sustainable development. Watch the video Highlight: Beyond Climate Neutrality DIE has also contributed to a policy paper by the German Advisory Council on Global Change which recommends making national long-term strategies a key topic at the Glasgow climate conference in order to provide orientation for current climate policy. Up to now, countries have only been obliged to short-term ‘nationally determined contributions’ (NDCs) to climate-change mitigation. These need to become far more ambitious and also the climate crisis and the crises caused by the COVID-19 pandemic must be tackled together.
