| 1st Issue September 2021 Editorial After the quiet summer time we are back organising events to connect our members and offer space for peer-to-peer exchange and collaboration: the next EADI Directors’ meetingwill take place on 12 November in Bonn, and for 2 and 3 December we are planning a virtual get-together of academic coordinators of Development Studies programmes, so please save the dates, further information will follow soon! Our latest blog post, published on the occasion of the World Water Week, argues that the debate around Water Operator Partnerships needs to be re-politicised, and our thematic focus is on global supply chains today. As usual, we have picked some highlights from the latest member publications, as well as blogs, online events, calls and vacancies. From our Blog: Water Operator Partnerships Water Operator Partnerships after 15 years: Re-politicising the debate In our latest blog post Andrea Beck takes stock of the state of Water Operator Partnerships (WOPs), established in 2006 by the UN Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation. She concludes that more critical discussions are needed for WOPs to « truly contribute to the goal of safe water and sanitation for all: support for new and existing partnerships financing and investment, and best practices and lessons learned are important topics to be addressed, but there are other, more political issues – relating to power dynamics, indicators, and pro-poor service provision – that should play a larger role in the current policy debate, including at the upcoming Global WOPs Congress. » Read the postTo the blog overview EADI Directors’ Meeting on 12 November in Bonn After almost one and a half years of online events we are excited to plan our upcoming Directors’ meeting as a physical event – provided that the COVID-19 situation permits and that participants are happy with this. This time, the programme will focus on selected challenges in development research: Safety and security for researchers in difficult settings, influencing research funding policies, and academic freedom. As always, our Directors’ Meeting will provide an excellent opportunity to connect research institutes for more effective cooperation by sharing ideas, identifying common problems, discussing new trends. Read more Next Academic Coordinators Workshop: 2-3 December Save the Date: Development Studies and Climate Change: Ways Forward For Curriculum Building: on 2 and 3 December we will be holding our third expert workshop for coordinators of Development Studies programmes, this time with a focus on the climate change-development nexus and the resulting implications for building meaningful and contemporary Development Studies curricula. African heterodox ideologies for the realisation of sustainable development in the continent: This study by the Vienna Institute for International Dialogue and Cooperation (VIDC) undertakes an analysis of Sub-Saharan African perspectives on ways leading to climate-friendly sustainable development pathways, through a heterodox lens. The study includes a broad mapping of ideas: from green growth to heterodox socio-economic models, from eco-theology to the philosophy of Ubuntu, from eco-feminism to using law as a ordering tool to enforce sustainable development. Read the study Featured EADI Member: SUM, University of Oslo The Centre for Development and the Environment (SUM) at the University of Oslo, Norway, is currently one of the few institutions in Scandinavia advancing interdisciplinary research on development and the environment. SUM was established in 1990 as a response to the Brundtland Report, “Our common future”. Its research expertise covers a number of fields, such as development policy, global health, global governance and international policy, rural change, energy justice and sustainable consumption. Scandinavian Humanitarianism in the Twenty-First Century This open access book highlights how the political culture of Scandinavia is indeed characterized by the idea of doing good on the world stage, but then shows how this “Scandinavian Humanitarian Brand” is an asset that policymakers and others can capitalize on to legitimize policy interventions and ideas, or to advance commercial, diplomatic, and security interests. Providing case studies from all Scandinavian countries, this book shows how the brand is made, reinforced, and used in a variety of policy contexts.
