2nd Issue September 2021 Editorial With this newsletter, we intend to direct your attention to two upcoming EADI events. As from today, the applications for our academic coordinator workshop on 02 and 03 December are open. You can find more information on our website. Furthermore, we would like to invite you to save the dates of our upcoming communications workshop on 25 – 26 November. More information will follow soon. A roundtable discussion on « Rural aspirations – livelihood decisions and rural development trajectories” – built on a special issue of the EJDR – took place in August. A video of the event is now available. Our latest blogpostfocuses on the sustainable energy supply of health facilities in Ghana. Based on this topic, we put a thematic focus on energy and highlight recent member’s publications on the issue. Finally, we present to you the latest vacancies, events, calls, blogposts, and opinion pieces of our members. Sustainable Energy Supply: The Case of Health Facilities in Ghana « While data on electricity access for health facilities in SSA is sparse, a study from 2013 in eleven Sub-Saharan countries revealed that only 28% of health facilities and 34% of hospitals had reliable access. Today, UN Development predicts that 25% of health facilities are still without access to electricity while 28% face regular power outages. No electricity often means no lights during the night, no possibility to sanitize instruments, as well as missing cooling circles for vaccines and medications, all of which are vital in the fight against Covid-19 ». However, « successfully setting-up a mini-grid or off-grid system cannot be achieved by simple plug-and-play. », Our latest blog post sheds the light on what the EnerSHelF project is doing to help. They were selected for their notoriety and representation of larger global issues, which have changed or will change our lives across the world. Society will likely remember most of these disasters as tragic, but largely isolated events that affected certain parts of the world for a period of time. This report explains that these events are only the tip of the iceberg, by highlighting how these events are interconnected with each other, with other larger processes, as well as with our action or inaction. They can lead to future disasters or will worsen existing problems such as biodiversity loss or poverty. Read more Thematic Focus: Energy How to Rein in Fossil Fuel Subsidies?
