 2nd Issue October 2021 Editorial Today we are happy to announce that registration is open for this year’s development research communications workshop on 25 November; so if you’re a communications professional or a researcher with communication interests, please sign up! And we’d like to remind you that our next virtual dialogue takes place coming Wednesday. It will provide critical notes on the expansion of green bonds in the South from a multidisciplinary perspective which is surely interesting for many of us here. And, as COP26 kicks off this week, our thematic focus is on climate change. Apart from that, we’ve got of course more picks and highlights further below, as well as the usual calls, vacancies, opinions and events.From our Blog: Social Accountability Initiatives How social accountability initiatives are helping pursue social justice Achieving social justice in service delivery in the health, social welfare, and humanitarian sectors is still a formidable challenge in most developing countries. Poor and marginalised people generally lack the voice to make their demands heard and the awareness to claim their rights. However, social accountability initiatives have become a promising way to address these issues, as a panel discussion at the recent EADI ISS Conference showed. This post highlights the key insights that emerged during the discussion, which focused on issues related to ensuring substantive citizenship and legitimacy and the role of interlocutors, donors, and of researchers themselves in helping pursue social justice through such initiatives. | Book Review: Democracy and Development in Indonesia |
| The difficult relationship between democracy and development in Indonesia: A book review « Jean-Luc Maurer’s book “Indonésie : l’envol mouvementé du Garuda. Développement, dictature et démocratie” is a comprehensive political history of Indonesia, encompassing geography, demography, society and economy, from pre-colonial times to the present day. » writes Gerry Rodgers: « The title, freely translated into English, is Indonesia: the Garuda’s rocky take-off: Development, Dictatorship and Democracy. And the central thread of this book are these “three Ds” in the course of Indonesia’s history. Maurer examines the nature and pace of development under different forms of democratic, populist, authoritarian or dictatorial regimes, and tries to understand the causality. » Read the post |
| Research Communications Workshop, 25 November |
| We and our Research Communications Working Group cordially invite communications professionals from our community and interested researchers to this year’s development research communications workshop (online). We will have a discussion on whether development researchers should act as advocates, hear about IIED’s experience with stakeholder engagement in an increasingly digital work environment, and explore the implications of our aim to decolonise the ways we work and produce knowledge on the language that we use. The workshop will be held on 2 and 3 December with the title “Development studies and climate change: ways forward for curriculum building”. | Highlight: Climate Change, Migration and Social Protection |
| There are several aspects of climate-induced short-term or circular migration, especially in combination with other socio-economic factors, that are not fully understood. Without reliable data on the pattern of circular migration, policymakers can not recognise or address migrants’ needs, issues and vulnerabilities. The IIED Working Paper « Connecting the dots: climate change, migration and social protection » provides an understanding of what drives migration, the patterns associated with it, its issues and consequences, and provide broader policy recommendations. | Highlight: Decolonising Methods and Methodologies |
| The groundbreaking book « Decolonising Methodologies Research and Indigenous Peoples » (1998) by Dr Linda Tuhiwai Smith remains an international bestseller, translated into Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Italian, and Bahasa Indonesian. In this recorded lecture of the Interdisciplinary Global Development Centre at York University, Dr Tuhiwai Smith discusses decolonising research methods and provides reflections regarding the practical conduct of social science research methods. She talks about how to navigate and resist colonial legacies of knowledge production and resist extractivist models.Watch the video |
