| Today we look forward to our annual Directors’ Meeting of EADI member institutes starting this evening, for the first time in a hybrid format! We would also like to remind you that you are still able to register for our virtual development research communications workshop on 25 November, and that you’ve got one day left to apply for our workshop for academic coordinators of Development Studies programmes. Apart from that we are proud that our accreditation programme celebrates its 10th birthday, and in our latest blog post our colleague Basile Boulay argues that we can no longer afford to shy away from a discussing about the good life. To reflect the many efforts in our community to address the huge task of decolonising the development sector, this is our thematic focus today. Enjoy the read! |
| From our Blog: Sustainable Futures – Yes, but How? |
| Sustainable Futures – Yes, but How? A critical book review « Kaplinsky’s views replicate the mistake most mainstream economic analyses make by giving too much credit to technological progress without questioning the growth-focused mantra and its implications in terms of individual consumption », writes our colleague Basile Boulay in his critical review of Raphael Kaplinsky’s new book Sustainable Futures – An Agenda for Action. « Discussing technological change is obviously necessary and ignoring its potential would be foolish », he points out. « But equally important is the recognition that technology is not (ideologically) neutral and can have pervasive effects on society, especially when its regulatory framework is too weak and when societal norms still encourage, if not glorify, unreasonable levels of personal consumption. » Read the post |
| Accreditation: Looking Back and Moving Forward |

| We are proud and happy that the EADI International Accreditation Council for Global Development Studies and Research (EADI/IAC) celebrates its 10th anniversary this year! On this occasion, IAC secretary Joost Mönks has written a briefing paper summarising the purpose, history and objectives of the IAC, and giving an overview of criteria and steps of the accreditation process: « A certain sense of urgency existed among development institutes that were going through an accreditation process, since they were facing accreditation frameworks that were not (fully) adapted to the specific (multidisciplinary) nature of development studies (DS). In the emerging European Area of Higher Education (EHEA), the EADI institutes wished, where possible, to influence proactively the options for accreditation and quality assurance as far as Development Studies was concerned. » Read the paper |

| Decolonising Development Research: Why it is urgently needed and what steps must be taken In this blog post Aram Ziai argues that it is an urgent necessity to disentangle development from the Eurocentric epistemological and ontological spaces and make efforts to build collaborative and co-creative economies of care and share. Within such economies, the phenomenon of development is not perceived as a transactional process, but as a depolarized plural practice. | The NADEL Center for Development and Cooperation at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, has been training individuals for careers in development and cooperation since the 1970s. NADEL’s mission is tobuild and share knowledge for effective policy making that addresses global and local development challenges. The Centre is closely linked to research at the Development Economics Group, as well as to ongoing development-research activities at various ETH departments and competence centers. Last month NADEL celebrated its 50th anniversary. Read more |
| On 15 November, NADEL is hosting an online-session to inform on its master programme in Development and Cooperation. The programme provides a broad understanding of local and global development challenges, skills for working in interdisciplinary and intercultural teams, and the tools and methods used in organizations engaged in international cooperation. During the eight- to ten-month on-the-job training abroad, students apply their knowledge as junior professionals in an international organization. The programme is designed for graduates from the natural and engineering sciences to the humanities and social sciences. Read more |
