 Issue December 2021 Editorial We’d like to start our last newsletter this year with a heads-up for our very first event in 2022: don’t miss Benoît Falisse from the University of Edinburgh discuss Citizens Committees and Local Elites in Burundi on 19 January, based on a paper in our journal, the EJDR. For the time being, we’ve got two new blog posts for you, one on decolonising North-South research partnerships and one on the pros and cons of social impact bonds. And, being extremely worried by the devastating situation of refugees at the European borders, we’ve joined more than 100 organisations in an open call on the EU. Apart from our usual calls, vacancies, events and opinion picks, our thematic focus is on migration this time, not to forget the special issue on China as today’s highlight.From our BlogSome steps for decolonising international research-for-development partnerships »To truly decolonise research », write the authors of this post, « it is necessary to decolonise every aspect of it – including the way in which we collaborate internationally. » In a session at the recent EADI/ISS conference, they discussed possible ways for decolonising the research ecosystem, process and outputs. They particularly suggest to approach North-South partnerships as a process which « starts with decentralised, inclusive, and democratic agenda setting, followed by resource allocation that acknowledges the indispensable and complementary contributions of all partners. » Read the post |
| Social Impact Bonds: Doing Real Good or a Wolf in a Sheep’s Clothing?Our latest blog post this year explores the up- and downsides of social impact bonds which are designed as a results-based funding mechanism where private investors fund some or all upfront costs of a social oriented intervention. If the intervention successfully delivers the pre-agreed outcomes for the recipients, investors recover their investment plus a return, normally paid by a central or local government. However, critics say, that they are not only too expensive, but also might « diffuse the need for more structural approaches to solving major societal problems. » Read the post |

| EADI is one of the signatories of the joint declaration by more than 100 civil society and professional organisations working on asylum, migration, humanitarian assistance and human rights initiated by the European Council on Refugees and Exiles: « We are shocked by the continuing humanitarian crisis at the borders between the EU and Belarus which causes immense suffering and has led to the deaths of at least ten people. While we fully condemn the actions of Belarus, we urge a response from the EU, the EU’s Member States, and all relevant European and international organisations that is in line with EU and international legal obligations and with standards of common decency. » Read and share the full statement |

| The University of Bergen (UiB), Norway, works specifically to promote interdisciplinary research on migration, health and inequality, as key themes within its strategic initiative on global challenges. The three themes are closely linked but can also stand alone. Several faculties have established high quality research within these themes, and the University seeks to further develop this research in an interdisciplinary setting. Read more |
| Bergen Summer Research School 2022:Understanding and addressing inequality, Online, 7-17 June 2022The annual Bergen Summer Research School (BSRS) is an interdisciplinary venue for PhD students who want to explore some of the greatest challenges of our time. This summer, six parallel disciplinary courses will focus on key global challenges, including climate change and mobility; governance and inequality; economic experiments in developing countries; higher education and the arts; food security; and gender, justice and environmental crises.
