 1st Issue February 2022 Editorial At the moment we are busy at the EADI secretariat with designing a new state-of-the-art website, recording a podcast series and preparing our next general conference in Lisbon – with interesting news to come during the next few months. For the time being we recommend a new blog post that looks at proposed nature conservation efforts from a decolonial lens and have chosen a few highlights from our member community for you. Our thematic focus is on digitalisation today, and, apart from the calls, events and opinion pieces at the bottom, we’ve got some interesting job offers to share.From our Blog: The “White Saviour” Deal for NatureIn our latest blog post, Gert van Hecken and Vijay Kolinjivadi from the Institute of Developent Policy argue that the current nature protection agenda such as the Global Deal for Nature is not only a dangerous distraction from the root causes of environmental degradation, but also the ongoing legacy of colonial practices and modes of thinking. It is deeply rooted in « whiteness as capitalist ecology », they write: « Whiteness is a deeply normalised ideology that points the finger at an imperfect world that only requires greater technical sophistication and political will to manage. » Read the postTo the blog overview |

| Highlight: The Geopolitics of African Renewable Energy |
| This paper by ECDPM gives a reality check for the EU’s engagement in African renewable energy and it makes recommendations for strengthening the EU’s renewable energy cooperation with Africa. Both European and Chinese actors are trying to adapt to a greener global environment. This can create new forms of competition, but also opportunities for rapidly increasing capacity and access on the African continent. The EU will need to adapt both its rhetoric, and its business model to respond to the needs and constraints of African energy systems. Read more |
| Highlight: Podcast on Global Poverty |
| Why does global poverty exist and could we share wealth more evenly?A new episode of the King’s Department of International Development podcast episode looks at levels and causes of global poverty and whether universal basic income schemes offer a way to address it. Researchers share insights on what lies behind global poverty including the effects of the pandemic and where it is increasing the fastest. They also look at the suggestion of a guaranteed minimum income, and how fixed and deep-rooted ideas around work could be affecting grassroots support for such schemes and be contributing to poverty around the world. | We cordially congratulate the German Institute for Development Evaluation (DEval) to it’s 10th anniversary! It was established in 2012 with the aim of making German development cooperation more effective. With its organisational autonomy and scientific independence, DEval was an institutional innovation from the outset and remains unique not only in Germany but also internationally. Since then, the institute has been performing independent and scientifically sound evaluations which provide a basis for evidence-based decision-making in development policy. Read more |
