2nd Issue May 2022 Editorial Today we are excited to announce that the call for panels for our next general conference, jointly organised with the Centre for African and Development Studies (CeSA) in Lisbon, is now open. And after the great success of our very first joint podcast with King’s Department of International Development we are also excited to offer you the second episode on labour hierarchies. Our journal, the EJDR, is also very active these days with two events early next month: the information event for early career researchers on 9 June and the launch of the special issue on social protection and social cohesion on 15 June. Our latest blog post sheds the light on the health-energy-nexus, particularly in Africa, and our thematic focus is on food an agriculture today. Call for Panels for our 2023 General Conference « Towards New Rhythms of Development » is the title of our next general conference which will take place from 10 to 13 July 2023 in a hybrid format in Lisbon, Portugal, and is kindly hosted by the Centre for African and Development Studies (CeSA). The development landscape has never been static but in these times of uncertainty and insecurity, we are witnessing ever more profound shifts in global relations, inequalities, and forms of exclusion. The Lisbon conference aims to illuminate the various causes and manifestations of these current unprecedented challenges and to explore and map ‘new rhythms of development’. As in our 2021 joint conference with ISS, we are inviting different panel formats. Application deadline is 04 September 2022. Please feel free to spread the call as far and wide as possible! To the call New Podcast Episode on Labour Hierarchies Join us to reflect on some key contemporary issues surrounding work and migration, including the role of gender and imperialism: In the second episode of our podcast series, our colleague Basile Boulay and King’s College’s Ingrid Harvold Kvangraven speak to Rosa Abraham (Azim Premji University, India) and Lucia Pradella (King’s College, London, UK) about their respective work on the Indian labour market and the political economy of work in the Mediterranean region. Read more and listen New on our Blog: The Health-Energy-Nexus How off-grid energy can play a vital role in quality healthcare provision in Sub-Saharan Africa « Especially in rural areas in Sub-Saharan Africa, health facilities have by no means stable energy supply in many cases. Today, UN Development predicts that 25% of health facilities are without access to electricity at all while 28% face regular power outages in this region of the world » write Jonas Bauhof and Callistus Agbaam. Off-grid systems appear to be the most feasible solution, but although their potential benefits are enormous, they usually entail some initial investment cost. Highlight: Unpacking New Climate Wars Actors and Drivers of Conflict in the Sahel As violence and insecurity increase in the Sahel, understanding the main causes and drivers of conflicts is of growing importance. In policy circles, the idea that climate change is causing violence and displacement is increasingly articulated in the popularised term of ‘climate wars’. This report by the Danish Institute for International Studies (DIIS) nuances this mainstream idea by arguing that violence and conflict in the Sahel are caused not by climate change, but by the presence of armed groups, jihadist insurgencies and military interventions with diverging political and ideological agendas.
