Welcome to the fortnightly newsletter of the European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI). |
1st Issue June 2022 Editorial Today we’d like to remind you of two upcoming events in connection with our journal, the European Journal of Development Research (EJDR): on 9 June early career researchers will have the opportunity to meet the journal’s early career editor and learn everything about the submission process and available support. On 15 June we and the German Development Institute – Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) invite everybody to an online panel discussion on social protection and social cohesion which is the official launch event of the upcoming special issue. And, of course, we are very excited that the third episode of our joint podcast with King’s College, London, and the Development Economics Blog is out! As usual, we’ve put together more highlights, publication picks, calls & vacancies further below. New on our Blog The Legitimacy of Sustainability Initiatives in Tanzania One of the chief concerns of new sustainability initiatives for managing natural resources and involving public and private actors is to build and retain legitimacy among different audiences and stakeholders. But how can we better understand the legitimacy of sustainability partnerships from the perspective of local communities? Or, more precisely, how do different sustainability partnerships develop, gain (or fail to gain), and manage legitimacy in local communities? What kinds of legitimacy do they seek and how? And which paths for building and maintaining legitimacy yield what kinds of perceived conservation and socio-economic outcomes? The author of our latest blog post did a thorough research on these questions. ReadTo the blog overview New Podcast Episode: Hierarchies in Value Chains Global value chains have become crucial for economic development, both at national and international scales. Listen to Pamela Mondliwa, Special Adviser on economic policy to the Minister of Finance, South Africa, and Intan Suwandi from Illinois State University, USA, to learn about production and value chains in South Africa and Indonesia, the big debates about global value chains’ role in development, and how the notion of power is important for understanding possibilities and constraints. To the podcast News from EADI Working Groups Our Working Group on Social Protection has published a new Social Protection Brief, highlighting recent publications on the topic, events and opportunities. For the master’s programme in Social Protection at Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences, there are scholarships available for outstanding applicants from low- and middle-income countries. Read the brief The Convivial Thinkers, our Working Group on Post- and Decolonial Perspectives on Development, have a new blog post critiquing fixed-space notions of science-as-saviour that are instead precipitating increasing inequality and catastrophic climate collapse. There is no space, she argues, to seek out pluriversal, historically rooted knowledges that might help us to establish more inclusive and socially just approaches to life on earth. At its most ambitious, ‘political settlements analysis’ (PSA) promises to explain why conflicts occur and states collapse, the conditions for their successful rehabilitation, different developmental pathways from peace, and how to better fit development policy to country context. The event is organised by The Department of International Environment and Development Studies at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NORAGRIC) and can be attended in Oslo and online. At its basics, the thesis of limits is straightforward: material growth cannot continue forever in a finite planet, hence deep transformations are needed in our growth-based economies to avoid climate breakdown.
