Higher Education as a Site for Struggle in Africa CODESRIA Webinar Series  CODESRIA invites you to a forthcoming webinar on the recently published text Chasing Freedom. This webinar conceptualizes Higher Education as a Site for Struggle in Africa and is inspired by the numerous stories of heroic struggle in the book Chasing Freedom: Histories, Analyses and Voices of Student Activism in South Africa. Taking South Africa as the case study, the authors of the book explore how student movements comprehend and articulate their demands in the process of decolonization and Africanization of the curriculum, their transformative effect on the university and the role that a decolonized and African university should play in the pursuit of freedom. This webinar will dive into this timeless and timely discussion that has gained expression within CODESRIA through its work on academic freedom. Since 1990, the Council’s academic freedom project sought the continuous intellectual engagement and dialogue among its members on the continent and the diaspora. The webinar intends to re-engage these conversations with young scholars who bring to the forefront the transformation of universities specifically with regard to race, gender, patriarchy, sexuality, and people living with disabilities in relation to student experiences. Ce webinaire conceptualise l’enseignement supérieur comme un lieu de lutte en Afrique et s’inspire des nombreuses histoires de lutte héroïque contenues dans le livre Chasing Freedom : Histories, Analyses and Voices of Student Activism in South Africa. Prenant l’Afrique du Sud comme étude de cas, les auteurs du livre explorent comment les mouvements étudiants comprennent et articulent leurs demandes dans le processus de décolonisation et d’africanisation du curriculum, leur effet transformateur sur l’université et le rôle qu’une université décolonisée et africaine devrait jouer dans la poursuite de la liberté. Ce webinaire se plongera dans cette discussion intemporelle et opportune qui s’est exprimée au sein du CODESRIA à travers son travail sur la liberté académique. Depuis 1990, le projet du Conseil sur la liberté académique a cherché à susciter un engagement et un dialogue intellectuels continus entre ses membres sur le continent et la diaspora.
