2nd Issue August 2022 Editorial Today it’s our last reminder to submit a panel for our 2023 Lisbon conference, organised together with the Centre for African and Development Studies (CEsA) at the University of Lisbon, Portugal; don’t miss it! Our latest blog post sheds the light on the correlation between social protection, social cohesion and public support for climate policies, and for mid-September we can recommend two really interesting (virtual) events. Apart from that it’s quiet, except for the extraordinarily many job-openings at our member institutes at the moment. Our thematic focus is on women and feminism today.New on our Blog Social protection and social cohesion are key for climate actionDaniele Malerba from the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) explores the role that social protection and social cohesion play for the acceptance of climate policies. Research, mostly in high-income countries, has found that fairness is actually the most important determinant for public acceptability of climate policies. To implement such policies in lower income countries too and overcome the conflict between social and environmental goals, he concludes that well-functioning social protection systems are key. EADI/CEsA Lisbon 2023: Submit a Panel by 4 September! |
Call for Panels for our flagship event closes in 10 days! The development landscape has never been static but in these times of uncertainty and insecurity, we are witnessing ever more profound shifts in global relations, inequalities, and forms of exclusion. Therefore, a fundamental rethinking of development has never been more urgent, timely and salient. The Lisbon conference aims to illuminate the various causes and manifestations of the current unprecedented challenges and to explore and map ‘new rhythms of development’. As we seek to provide spaces for discussion, engagement, sharing, and co-creation among conveners, contributors and participants, the conference gives room for a variety of different panels and sessions.
