EADI eNewsletter #9/2 2022 | Writing Good Journal Papers, Health & More

Welcome to the fortnightly newsletter of the European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI).
 2nd Issue September 2022

Editorial

We are back from our very first regional meeting and PhD symposium which brought together members and stakeholders from the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia. Still under the impression of the many inspiring inputs and vivid conversations, we very much look forward to organising similar events in other regions! We are also happy that our videothat explains in detail how early career researchers can get their papers in top shape for publication in academic journals is finally online! And we’ve got a new blog post whichreflects on the apolitical framing of digital technologies, written by our own Basile Boulay. Last but not least we’ve put together highlights and publication picks from our member community, as well as the usual calls, vacancies and opinions. Our thematic focus is on health today.
New On Our Blog: Our Bright Digital Lives
« How do modern technologies, which suck up an increasing share of our attention span and time, prevent us from conceptualising and implementing new forms of individual and collective life? » asks our colleague Basile Boulay in this blog post, criticising the (a)political discourse around smartphone-driven technologies that « effectively manages to hide their environmental and socio-economic consequences ». He concludes: « A more reasoned use of tech devices, a better understanding of value chains and a thorough reflection of what a good life should look like would be first steps to start addressing these pressing global issues. » Read the post

How can we advance towards new systems of social relations that will help us to survive and overcome the climate crisis and to reverse the planet’s sixth mass extinction? Read more
Highlight: Reducing Inequality, 5-7 October, Bogotá
The United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) in partnership with Universidad de los Andes (UNIANDES) convenes a three-day conference on reducing inequality, held in Bogotá, Colombia, on 5-7 October 2022. Highlight: 12 October: Justice in Knowledge Production
How can Open and Responsible Science (ORS) respond to the challenge of epistemic justice, given the staggering amount of inequality in the geography of academic knowledge? Which principles connect the framework of ORS with epistemic justice when putting equity between forms of knowledges and ways of knowing at the centre of the conversation? In this hybrid event at ISS, these principles are explored, informed by the mis-framings that marginalized communities experience and their demands for alternative practices for knowledge co-creation.
