1st Issue November 2022EditorialAs this newsletter reaches your inbox, our annual Director’s Meeting, this times at King’s College, London, will be well underway, and if you happen to be in London you can still join us this Friday for our panel « Development in Crisis« . It is part of the 10th Anniversary conference of the Department of International Development at King’s, and we are proud to celebrate with our friends and colleagues there. You can also still register for our online roundtable next Thursday which will discuss potential and pitfalls of research-practice collaboration from various angles. As usual, we’ve got a new post on our blog, and with the climate COP27 starting this Sunday, our thematic focus is on climate change today. Blog: Rethinking Work For Sustainability and Justice« Environmental destruction, rising inequalities, fears of massive unemployment from accelerated automation, and growing dissatisfaction with work centred lives are all symptoms that invite to rethink the meaning, purpose, volume, content, and distribution of work », writes Noragric‘s Erik Gomez-Baggethun in our latest blog post. Given that our understanding and concept of work have always been fiercely contested throughout history, he calls for restructuring work around principles of sustainability, solidarity, and time justice. It unpacks the implications for sustainable development and for disadvantaged social groups through the lenses of intersectionality and power. It proposes the creation of a new eco-social contract and a policy approach based on alternative economies, transformative social policies, and reimagined multilateralism and strengthened solidarities.
