Pour ce cinquième épisode, nous rencontrons Romain Lahaye, doctorant en Histoire, Anthropologie et Archéologie à l’université Paris 1 – Panthéon-Sorbonne (IMAF – UMR 8171), dont la thèse porte sur l’art rupestre dans le Drakensberg. Archaeologists, historians, sociologists, urban planners, political scientists, anthropologists: many scientists are supported by IFAS-Research. The series broadcast on our YouTube channel intends to present some of them through short videos about their investigations. For this fifth episode, we meet Romain Lahaye, doctoral student in History, Anthropology and Archaeology at the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (IMAF – UMR 8171), whose PhD focuses on rock art in the Drakensberg. Filming a ‘Model Township’ during Apartheid Ce livre de Ludmila Ommundsen-Pessoa (Université du Havre) est consacré à la propagande cinématographique déployée par le régime d’apartheid, dans les années 1970-1980, lors du déplacement autoritaire des populations « coloured » du Cap vers le tout nouveau township de Mitchell’s Plain – présenté comme un immense progrès social et une réussite éclatante de la politique de ségrégation spatiale menée depuis les années 1950. Il est disponible en accès libre sur la plateforme OpenEdition, dans la collection « AfricaE ». This book by Ludmila Ommundsen-Pessoa (Université du Havre) is devoted to the cinematic propaganda deployed by the apartheid regime in the 1970s and 1980s during the authoritarian relocation of Cape Town’s ‘coloured’ population to the brand-new township of Mitchell’s Plain – presented as a huge social progress and a brilliant success of the policy of spatial segregation conducted since the 1950s. It is available as an open access book on the OpenEdition platform, in the ‘AfricaE’ collection. Varia Sources: Matériaux et Terrains en études africaines, n°5/2023 | Varia Sources: Materials and Fieldwork in African Studies, n°5/2023 La revue Sources : Matériaux et Terrains en études africaines présente son dernier numéro. Cette cinquième livraison offre un ensemble varié de contributions. L’entretien conduit par Florent Piton avec des historiens rwandais sur la question du recours aux sources locales pour écrire l’histoire du génocide, publié initialement en français, est ici traduit en kinyarwanda. Avec l’article de Maëline Le Lay, sur l’usage de la transcription d’une table-ronde portant sur le théâtre post-génocide, ils forment un mini-dossier interrogeant les sources historiques et artistiques à travers lesquelles aborder la violence génocidaire. Ces questionnements centrés sur le langage de la recherche parcourent également l’entretien d’Émilie Guitard avec Christian Seignobos, géographe et dessinateur. Aux côtés de l’article hors normes de Enrico Ille et Mohamed Salah sur la déambulation comme méthode de recherche pour enquêter sur les feux de palmiers-dattiers au Soudan, ils prolongent le numéro thématique que Sources a consacré à la nature. Le texte de Justin Pearce, qui ouvre ce numéro, analyse la fabrique des imaginaires révolutionnaires et anti-impérialistes à travers les inscriptions retrouvées dans d’anciens camps d’entrainement en Angola. Accompagné de nombreux clichés, il annonce notre prochain dossier sur la photographie. Ce numéro varia fait aussi la part belle au rôle grandissant du langage numérique dans la recherche en études africaines : Hala Bayoumi analyse avec précision les atouts d’un outil de cartographie interactive fondé sur les données de recensements égyptiens, tandis que Claire Riffard nous offre une plongée dans la génétique des textes à travers l’étude de la numérisation des corpus de trois écrivains africains. Valmont Layne conclut en nous invitant à penser la ruée vers les technologies numériques depuis l’Afrique du Sud, et au prisme des inégalités d’accès, de production et de circulation des savoirs entre Nords et Suds. The journal Sources: Materials and Fieldwork in African Studies presents its latest issue. This fifth issue offers a varied set of contributions. Florent Piton’s interview with Rwandan historians on the question of using local sources to write the history of the genocide, originally published in French, is here translated into Kinyarwanda. Together with Maëline Le Lay’s paper on the use of the transcript of a round-table discussion on post-genocide theatre, they form a mini-dossier questioning the historical and artistic sources through which to approach genocidal violence. These questions centred on the language of research also run through Émilie Guitard’s interview with Christian Seignobos, geographer and cartoonist. Alongside the non-standard article by Enrico Ille and Mohamed Salah on « perambulatory interviews » as a fieldwork method for investigating date palm fires in Sudan, they extend the thematic issue Sources devoted to nature. The text by Justin Pearce, opening this issue, analyses the manufacture of revolutionary and anti-imperialist imaginaries through graffiti found in former military training camps in Angola. Accompanied by numerous photographs, it announces our next dossier on photography. This issue also focuses on the growing role of digital language in African studies research: Hala Bayoumi analyses the advantages of an interactive mapping tool based on Egyptian census data, while Claire Riffard takes us on a journey into the genetics of texts through the study of the digitisation of three African writers’ corpus. Valmont Layne concludes by inviting us to think about the rush towards digital technologies from South Africa, and about the prism of inequalities of access, production and circulation of knowledge between North and South.
