| 1st Issue April 2023 Editorial At the moment we are putting together the last bits and pieces of the preliminary programme for our general conference in July which will be published very soon. We also look forward to the last meeting of our current Executive Committee in Budapest next week and the attached public conference on 20 April. So if you happen to be around on that day, please do come along! Our latest blog post argues that Development Studies must support critiques of neoliberalism, and with the episode released this week, season 2 of our « Hierarchies of Development » podcast is complete. From Our Blog Development Studies cannot become an apology for the status quo « Development Studies must always be critical, or it becomes just an apology for the status quo, for exploitation, for the reproduction of inequality within and between nations, and for the destruction of the conditions of life on Earth », writes Alfredo Saad-Filho from the Department of International Development at King’s College, London. « Today, Development Studies faces a neoliberal modality of capitalism whose prosperity relies on speculation, despoliation, extraction and fraud, and which may be sliding into permanent economic underperformance, new forms of fascism and environmental collapse. This fourth and last episode of season two of the « Hierarchies of Development » podcast once again sheds the light on food and agriculture, this time with Itishree Pattnaik from the Gujarat Institute of Development Research, India. Hear about feminisation of agriculture in India, cross-state comparisons between Gujarat and West Bengal as well as ways forward to make the work of women in agriculture more visible. Listen Highlight: Great Gatsby and the Global South Intergenerational mobility, income inequality, and development In the Global South economic mobility across generations or intergenerational economic mobility is in and of itself an important topic for research with consequences for policy. It concerns the ‘stickiness’ or otherwise of inequality because mobility is concerned with the extent to which children’s economic outcomes are dependent on their parents’ economic outcomes. This open access book presents a new estimate for a developing country, namely Indonesia; it discusses the ‘Great Gatsby Curve’ and highlights the different positions of developed and developing countries. The Centre for African and Development Studies (CEsA) at the ISEG – Lisbon School of Economics and Management, University of Lisbon, is one of the oldest research centres dedicated to Development Studies in Portugal.
