Contract farming is everywhere, but how does it affect agrarian relations in the Global South?
« Contract farming is hailed as a source of jobs, income and stable markets for smallholders, and for providing a stable supply base and profits to agribusiness. However, whether it actually does lead to win-win outcomes remains highly contested », write the authors of our latest blog. They call for a new research agenda, examining for example contract farming’s influence on changes in land tenure, the prevalence of unpaid household labor and exploitation of hired labor, contract farming as a form of extractivism and the ecological burden of agricultural expansion and intensification. Virtual Dialogue with Shandana Khan Mohmand
The 2022 floods in Pakistan left an impact of unimaginable proportions in terms of the loss of lives, assets, livelihoods, and infrastructure, and in their implications for health, nutrition, and food pricing.These floods were a climate change disaster, and according to reports, Pakistan can expect more of these as a climate vulnerable country. But these are also a disaster of both internal and external governance. On 30th May 2023 starting 15:00 CEST, Shandana Khan Mohmand will join us to talk about disaster management and crisis governance. Register here
