2nd Issue August 2023 Editorial Welcome to a new edition of the EADI newsletter! This week, we have two new blogposts, and an open access publication highlight on the politics of development in Africa. We are also pleased to announce that a call for papers for a special issue of The European Journal of Development Research has been launched. In addition to this, you will find our usual selection of publications, jobs and calls from our member community. And don’t forget to send in your suggestions for the roster of events planned for our 50th anniversary next year! From our Blog: Global Partnerships Perspectives on Development Studies and Global Crises »Amid the multitude of current interconnected and mutually reinforcing global crises, the closing panel of our recent #NewDevRhythms conference in Lisbon centred around the question what Development Studies could do to understand and respond to the various facets of these crises, while, as a discipline, facing numerous crises of its own. This approach assumes that people in the Global South are located ‘outside’ or ‘beyond’ politics, a well-established version of the racialised trope of the pre-modern ‘noble savage’. », argue Kalpana Wilson et al. taking a critical eye to how development intersects with ideology. EJDR invites authors, researchers, and practitioners interested and wishing to contribute to EJDR’s special issue, to submit their draft papers for consideration in the journal. Empirically-rooted papers, as well as theoretical and conceptual articles, are welcome. Contributions from the Global South and early career researchers’ papers are especially encouraged. Find out more about the submission and review process here. Highlight: Pockets of Effectiveness and the Politics of State-building and Development in Africa Repeated economic and social crises have demanded that development thinkers and policy actors have had to engage with the critical role that states play in delivering development. This open access volume shows that politics is the driving factor that shapes how well state agencies perform their roles. It deploys a new conceptual framework – the power domains approach – to explore the shifting fortunes of key state agencies in five countries – Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and Zambia – over the past three decades.
