This time we invite you to register for next month’s distinguished guest lecture on resettlement colonies and urban marginality in India and to a new EADI Working Group! We can announce that the last plenary video from our recent Lisbon conference is up for rewatching, and we’ve published two new blog posts over the last two weeks: one makes the case for rethinking development research project designs to achieve more equal grounds between Northern and Southern researchers. The other explores the role of green finance for phasing out fossil fuel-derived virgin plastics. In line with the new and alarming update on the transgression of six planetary boundaries, our thematic focus is on green economy today. |

What Is a “Development” Research Project? Transforming Ideas of Development through Development Research
“How can research projects be strategically designed to challenge the North-South Divide?”, ask the authors of our latest blog post. Further to reexamining the equitability of research partnerships, they come up with seven very practical proposals to help rethinking study designs in relation to empirical data, methods and theory. As a staring point, they suggest to appreciate knowledge that already exists locally and to critically exame and challenge when and why cases from the North and South tend to be treated differently. Why might Green Finance and Sustainable Blended Finance be needed under the Global Plastic Treaty? « The proposed global plastic treaty seeks to end plastic pollution by regulating the entire lifecycle of plastics. To end global plastic pollution and decarbonize the global plastic economy, financial flows that fuel the global plastic industry must truly be tailored towards transitioning away from the current models of economic development, consumption, and overreliance on fossil fuel-derived virgin plastics – considering that 98 percent of plastics produced globally are fossil fuel-derived. This will require a 360-degree shift from the current mode of financing in the global plastic industry that encourages overreliance on fossil-fuel feedstock » Read more |

In this distinguished guest lecture (online), Karen Coelho will discuss how “Resettlement colonies” – sites of mass formal low-income housing – have emerged on metropolitan peripheries across India over the past two decades, redefining the social geographies and institutional practices of urban marginality. Built on lands of low economic value (flood-prone, hazardous or polluted), they house a concentration of vulnerable urban populations – informal workers or migrants from low castes, ethnic or religious minorities – that have been evicted from “slums” in the city. Development Studies in Turbulent Times The closing plenary at our recent #NewDevRhythms conference centred around the question what Development Studies could do to understand and respond to the various facets of contemporary crises, while, as a discipline, facing numerous crises of its own. The panel brings forward non-European perspectives by representatives of Development Studies Associations from different parts of the world. Watch the video |
