Register to attend the Reimagining Heritage, Archives and Museums convening  Date: 13 – 15 February 2024  Join us for an international convening to engage in discourse and develop concrete tools and programmes that support the future of our heritage, archives and museums. Reimagining Heritage, Archives and Museums: Today/Tomorrow is a multi-stakeholder project, initiated by the French Institute of South Africa and the Embassy of France, co-constructed with South African partners and in wider consultation with African institutions. The convening will bring together about 300 experts, scholars, educators, artists, performers, community and spiritual leaders, civil society organisations, collectors, urban and rural developers, designers, members of the public and more to imagine and celebrate innovative approaches to heritage, archives, and museums. Date: 1st March Time: 10:00 AM Location: IFAS This event will feature a 45-minute presentation followed by a 45-minute conversation, providing insights into their project « A forgotten heritage? Minority, competing and contradictory memories of mining in South Africa » supported by IFAS-Research.

Portrait de recherche : Bacara Spruit | Research Portrait: Bacara Spruit  Découvrez notre nouveau « Portrait de recherche », qui présente le travail de terrain de Bacara Spruit. Doctorante en archéologie à l’université du Witwatersrand, elle analyse les changements dans les modes d’occupation des grottes de Rockshelter et Boomplaas au cours de la transition entre le Pléistocène et l’Holocène, à l’aide de méthodes innovantes. Here is our new “Research Portrait”, presenting the fieldwork of Bacara Spruit. As a PhD student in archaeology at the University of the Witwatersrand, she analyzes changes in occupation patterns at Rockshelter and Boomplaas caves during the Pleistocene to Holocene transition, using innovative methods.

Enquête « terrains empêchés ou entravés » | Survey on prevented or hindered fieldwork L’Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (Inalco) mène une enquête internationale sur les défis auxquels sont confrontés les chercheur·es en études aréales. Ils sollicitent votre participation à une brève enquête en ligne (15 minutes) pour recueillir des expériences, dans le but de documenter les stratégies utilisées par les chercheur·es confrontés à des difficultés d’accès au terrain. Les résultats de l’enquête seront partagés publiquement, contribuant au développement d’outils et de méthodes pour soutenir les chercheur·es, les doctorant·es et les étudiant·es. The National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations (Inalco) is conducting an international survey on the challenges researchers face in area studies. They request participation in a brief online survey (15 minutes) to gather experiences, aiming to document strategies employed by researchers doing fieldwork under difficult circumstances. The survey results will be shared openly, contributing to the development of tools and methods to support researchers, doctoral candidates, and students.

The ISAfrica Stone Age Workshop, taking place from April 1st to 7th, 2024, will focus on hands-on knapping experiments and discussions about southern African Stone Age collections, aiming to foster interactions and provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the Stone Age in the region. Appel à candidatures du Prix de thèse 2024 du GIS Études africaines en France Le GIS Études africaines en France organise son Prix de thèse 2024, attribuant 2500 € à deux lauréates ou lauréats pour soutenir la publication de leurs thèses chez ENS Éditions. Les travaux éligibles, portant sur le continent africain et ses diasporas et soutenus en France entre janvier et décembre 2023, doivent se démarquer par leur excellence et leur caractère innovant dans les sciences humaines et sociales et les lettres. La date limite de candidature est le 26 février 2024. WomAtWork Call for proposals In 2024, IFAS-Research is partnering with European Union-funded project “Women at work: for a comparative history of African female urban professions (Ethiopia, Sudan, Tanzania, Ghana) 1920-1970” (WomAtWork). The project currently invites applications for research and fieldwork grants aimed to support Master students, PhD candidates, and postdocs interested in the history of women of popular classes working in urban professions during the colonial and early post-colonial periods in Africa (1920-1970). The deadline for application is 1st March 2024. Find the call here.

Appels à projets des 27e Rendez-vous de l’Histoire L’appel à projets Cartes Blanches RVH2024 est ouvert jusqu’au 4 mars 2024 pour les 27e Rendez-vous de l’Histoire à Blois sur le thème « La ville ». Organisé en partenariat avec les Ministères de l’Éducation Nationale et de la Culture, l’événement vise à rassembler passionnés d’histoire, professionnels et amateurs, autour de débats, conférences, expositions, et animations. Les jeunes chercheurs et chercheuses sont encouragés à soumettre des projets, notamment pour le Lab du jeune chercheur, qui retiendra une vingtaine de propositions.

Appel à contributions de la revue In Situ | Call for contributions from the In Situ journal L’appel à contributions de la revue In Situ, intitulé « Les invisibles du patrimoine : Quel(s) patrimoine(s) et pour qui ? », cherche à mettre en lumière les groupes souvent exclus des systèmes de reconnaissance, de protection, et de gestion du patrimoine. Les contributions pourront explorer les politiques d’inclusion dans les processus patrimoniaux. Les articles proposés doivent être soumis avant le 8 mars 2024 et peuvent aborder tous les types de patrimoines. Retrouvez l’appel ici. Who for? » aims to highlight groups often excluded from heritage recognition, protection, and management systems. École doctorale des Ateliers de la Pensée & Global Africa | Global Africa and Ateliers de la Pensée doctoral school Les Ateliers de la Pensée de Dakar (ADLP) et le Consortium des Instituts pour les Humanités (CHCI) ont mis en place une École doctorale en 2018 dans le but de contribuer au renouvellement des approches empiriques, méthodologiques et théoriques en études africaines. L’édition 2024, qui se tiendra à Dakar du 8 au 13 juillet 2024, se concentrera sur les débats transnationaux et aboutira à un numéro spécial de Global Africa en mars 2025. Candidatez ici avant le 25 mars. Les Ateliers de la Pensée de Dakar (ADLP) and the Consortium des Instituts pour les Humanités (CHCI) have established a Doctoral School since 2018, aiming to contribute to the renewal of empirical, methodological, and theoretical approaches in African studies. The 2024 edition, to be held in Dakar from July 8 to 13, 2024, will focus on transnational debates and result in a special issue to be published in Global Africa in March 2025. Atelier de formation RAHMSA | RAHMSA Training Workshop La deuxième itération de la série d’ateliers de formation RAHMSA se tiendra du 27 novembre au 3 décembre 2024, au Musée national de la Préhistoire en France. Les candidatures sont ouvertes jusqu’au 1er avril 2024. Cet atelier s’adresse aux étudiant·es et post-doctorant·es, au personnel des musées et aux professionnels du patrimoine, principalement de la Communauté de développement de l’Afrique australe (CDAA). Les participants prendront part à des visites de sites, à des conférences et à des travaux de groupe, et mèneront une réflexion sur les thèmes liés à la présentation des sites et à la diversité des perceptions. Retrouvez plus d’informations ici. The Second Workshop in the RAHMSA Training Workshop Series will take place from November 27 to December 3, 2024, at the Musée national de la Préhistoire in France. Open for applications until April 1, 2024, this workshop is designed for graduate and postdoctoral students, museum staff, and heritage practitioners, particularly from the Southern African Development Community (SADC). Journée Luttes ouvrières en Afrique du Sud

Dans le cadre de son cycle d’événements Rainbow seasons, l’Afrique du Sud à Bordeaux et du Festival La classe ouvrière c’est pas du cinéma, Sciences Po Bordeaux organise une journée consacrée aux luttes ouvrières. Assist A la suite d’une conférence de Judith Hayem sur la figure ouvrière en Afrique du Sud (à 9h30 au Musée d’Aquitaine), les films Come back Africa et Miners Shot Down seront projetés au Cinéma Utopia à 14h et 17h.

Huitième édition des REAF | Eighth edition of REAF

La prochaine édition des Rencontres des Études africaines en France (REAF) se tiendra à Nice du 1er au 4 juillet 2024 et réunira des spécialistes des sciences humaines et sociales, de littérature et de philosophie, des sciences de l’environnement et des sciences économiques. Publications

Nouveau numéro de Politique africaine Le dernier numéro de Politique africaine, intitulé « Ordres et Coercitions » et coordonné par Romane Da Cunha Dupuy et Lucie Revilla, est désormais disponible en ligne sur Cairn. Les huit contributions examinent les diverses formes et logiques d’imposition de la coercition sur les conduites, mettant l’accent sur la gouvernance où la coercition est un enjeu crucial, au-delà des conflits ou de la violence directe.

Quatrième numéro de Global Africa | Fourth issue of Global Africa

Le quatrième numéro du journal Global Africa explore le thème « Théoriser le Présent et le Futur : Afrique, création de connaissances et enjeux globaux ». Sous la direction de Uchenna Okeja et Faisal Garba, les contributeurs et contributrices explorent des sujets tels que la solidarité afro-caribéenne, le travail décolonial et les dimensions subjectives de la migration africaine. The fourth issue of the Global Africa journal explores the theme « Theorizing for the Present and the Future: Africa, Knowledge Creation, and Global Challenges. » Edited by Uchenna Okeja and Faisal Garba, the issue delves into topics such as Afro-Caribbean solidarity, decolonial work, and the subjective dimensions of African migration.

Parution du Guide méthodologique Miriades | Publication of Miriades methodology guide Le guide méthodologique Miriades, conçu pour les chercheur·es collaborant avec des pays du Sud, vise à servir d’outil pour analyser l’impact sociétal de la recherche et de l’innovation dans le Sud global. Développé par l’IRD avec la contribution de diverses organisations de recherche, le guide est disponible en accès libre. Accédez à l’ouvrage ici. The Miriades methodology guide, designed for researchers collaborating with Southern countries, serves as a methodological tool for analyzing the societal impact of research and innovation in the global South.
