IFAS-Research is pleased to invite you to its next research workshop, to be held on 11 July from 1pm to 4pm at IFAS. Entitled “South African speculative arts: creation, circulation & reception”, the event will gather scholars, artists, book sellers, agents, curators, writers and visual artists. Look back at our Policing Appearances, Reclaiming Aesthetics Workshop Le 22 mai, l’IFAS-Recherche et les boursières 2024 Jeanne Bouyat (chercheuse postdoctorale, Université de Johannesburg) et Line Relisieux (doctorante, London School of Economics) ont organisé  un atelier intitulé « Policing Appearances, Reclaiming Aesthetics. Perspectives from South African schools and from gang-present communities on the Cape Flats. ». Les chercheuses ont exploré la police des apparences à travers les relations de pouvoir (basées notamment sur la race, le genre, la classe et l’âge), mais aussi la renégociation de ces relations de pouvoir liée aux pratiques esthétiques. L’atelier s’est organisé en deux sessions axées sur deux projets de recherche en cours, l’un sur les écoles sud-africaines et l’autre sur les figures maternelles autour des gangs de rue. On 22 May, IFAS-Research together with 2024 grantees Jeanne Bouyat (Postdoctoral researcher, University of Johannesburg) and Line Relisieux (PhD candidate, London School of Economics) hosted a workshop entitled “Policing Appearances, Reclaiming Aesthetics. Perspectives from South African schools and from gang-present communities on the Cape Flats”. The researchers explored the policing of appearances through power relations (based on race, gender, class, and age), but also the renegotiation of these power relations linked to aesthetic practices. The workshop was organised into two sessions focusing on two ongoing research projects, one on South African schools, and the other on maternal figures around street gangs.

Look back at our Intermediaries and Governance in Africa Workshop Le 14 mai 2024, l’IFAS-Recherche, en collaboration avec le Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research (WiSER), a organisé l’atelier « Intermediaries and Governance in Africa » à la bibliothèque francophone Dibuka. Cet atelier est le premier résultant de notre nouvel appel à projets pour l’organisation d’événements. L’événement a réuni des économistes, des historien·nes et des politologues de l’université du Witwatersrand et de l’université de Johannesburg autour de deux sessions : la première sur les modes de gouvernance et types de loyauté dans la démocratie africaine, la deuxième sur la gouvernance réglementaire en Afrique et ses instruments de contrôle, les systèmes d’autorité politique en Afrique précoloniale, et les problèmes liés aux définitions arbitraires des frontières. On 14 May 2024, IFAS-Research, in collaboration with the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research (WiSER), organised the “Intermediaries and Governance in Africa” workshop at the Dibuka Francophone Library. This workshop is the first to result from our new call for events. The event brought together economists, historians and political scientists from the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Johannesburg for two sessions: the first on modes of governance and types of loyalty in African democracy, the second on regulatory governance in Africa and its instruments of control, systems of political authority in pre-colonial Africa, and the problems associated with arbitrary definitions of borders.

La Revue d’Histoire Contemporaine de l’Afrique (RHCA) lance un appel à contributions | The Journal of Contemporary African History (RHCA) calls for contributions La RHCA (disponible en libre accès) lance un appel à contributions pour sa rubrique Varia. La RHCA est une revue francophone d’histoire contemporaine du continent africain (Afrique du Nord et îles de l’océan Atlantique et de l’océan Indien comprises), s’intéressant à une période allant du XIXe siècle à nos jours. Retrouvez plus d’informations ici.   The RHCA (available in open access) is launching a call for contributions for its Varia section. The RHCA is a Francophone journal of contemporary history of the African continent (including North Africa and the islands of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans), covering the period from the 19th century to the present day. Appel à la coordination d’un numéro thématique des Cahiers Afriques | Call for the coordination of a thematic issue of Cahiers Afriques Le comité éditorial et scientifique des Cahiers Afriques lance un appel à la coordination d’un numéro thématique dédié aux Afriques, pour une parution prévue en 2026-27. Ce numéro vise à promouvoir la visibilité des doctorant·es et jeunes chercheur·ses en sciences humaines et sociales. Soulignant la pluralité et la diversité de l’Afrique, cet appel encourage une approche multidisciplinaire et pluraliste des réalités africaines, englobant également les espaces océaniques et les réseaux diasporiques. Les propositions de numéros doivent être soumises avant le 1er octobre 2024, avec une évaluation et une publication prévues pour les années suivantes. Plus d’informations ici. The editorial and scientific committee of Cahiers Afriques is calling for the coordination of a thematic issue dedicated to Africa, to be published in 2026-27. The aim of this issue is to promote the visibility of doctoral students and young researchers in the humanities and social sciences. Emphasising the plurality and diversity of Africa, this call encourages a multidisciplinary and pluralist approach to African realities, including oceanic spaces and diasporic networks. Proposals for issues must be submitted by 1 October 2024, with evaluation and publication planned for subsequent years. Further information here.

Call for abstract: Open Science in the South conference The third edition of the “Open Science in the South: African scientific publishing we want” conference, to be held in Cape Town from 2nd to the 4th December 2024, is welcoming abstract submissions until 30 June. The conference will focus on African scientific publishing, and will aim to take stock of publication practices among African scientists and the publishing ecosystem on the African continent, and to identify levers for improvement. This year’s edition will be held together with the Global Summit on Diamond Open Access. Find more information here.

Call for research “Towards an Inclusive and Sustainable Future for Work(ers) in Eastern and Southern Africa” The Southern Centre for Inequality Studies (University of the Witwatersrand) is launching a call for research “Towards an Inclusive and Sustainable Future for Work(ers) in Eastern and Southern Africa”, to develop a network of leading research institutions, engaged in cutting-edge and rigorous research, and to support labour policies and skills interventions towards a Just Transition. The project will offer grants to conduct original research on economic transformation, labour markets, social reproduction, or a related field. Proposals must be submitted in English by July 14. Appel à Articles pour la Nouvelle Revue du Travail | Call for Papers for the Nouvelle Revue du Travail La Nouvelle Revue du Travail lance un appel à articles sur le thème ‘Travail, syndicalisme et action collective en Afrique’ pour le corpus n°27 à paraître à l’automne 2025. Coordonné par Emmanuelle Bouilly, Sidy Cissokho et Maxime Quijoux, cet appel explore la vitalité persistante du salariat et du syndicalisme en Afrique, malgré les défis économiques et politiques. Les contributions sont attendues au plus tard le 1er septembre 2024. Plus d’informations ici. The Nouvelle Revue du Travail is issuing a call for articles on the theme ‘Labour, Trade Unionism and Collective Action in Africa’ for issue number 27, scheduled for release in autumn 2025. Coordinated by Emmanuelle Bouilly, Sidy Cissokho, and Maxime Quijoux, this call explores the enduring vitality of wage labor and unionism in Africa, despite economic and political challenges. Appel à articles « Infrastructures débordées. Gouvernance et mobilités quotidiennes dans les villes africaines » | Call for papers « Overridden infrastructure. Governance and mobilities in African cities” La revue EchoGéo lance un appel à contributions dans le cadre du dossier Sur le Champs. Ce numéro portera sur les infrastructures débordées et la gouvernance des mobilités quotidiennes dans les villes africaines. Il explorera les tentatives de modernisation des systèmes de mobilité, y compris l’introduction de nouvelles organisations de transport et de plateformes numériques, ainsi que la planification de grandes infrastructures de transport urbain ou interurbain, dans le contexte du développement économique du continent. Les contributions issues de diverses disciplines telles que la géographie, l’histoire, l’anthropologie et l’urbanisme sont les bienvenues. Tous les textes proposés devront être envoyés avant le 30 juin 2024. Retrouvez l’appel ici. The journal EchoGéo is launching a call for contributions as part of its Sur le Champs issue. This issue will focus on overburdened infrastructures and the governance of everyday mobility in African cities. It will explore attempts to modernise mobility systems, including the introduction of new transport organisations and digital platforms, as well as the planning of major urban or interurban transport infrastructures, in the context of the continent’s economic development. Contributions from various disciplines such as geography, history, anthropology, and urban planning are welcome. All submissions must be received by 30 June 2024. Find the call here.

WomAtWork : enregistrements video et audio de la conference Creative Methodologies | WomAtWork: videos and audio excerpts of the Creative Methodologies conference  Le projet WomAtWork, financé par l’Union européenne, soutient la recherche sur l’histoire des professions urbaines féminines en Afrique entre 1920 et 1970. En janvier 2024, le collectif a organisé une conférence de lancement intitulée Creative Methodologies. Vous pouvez désormais accéder aux enregistrements de l’ensemble de la conférence sur le site web du projet. The European Union-funded initiative WomAtWork supports research on the history of female urban professions in Africa from 1920 to 1970. In January 2024, the collective held a kick off conference titled Creative Methodologies. You can now access recordings of the entire conference on the project website.

Débat ouvert sur l’éthique de la recherche à l’IMAF | Open discussion on research ethics at IMAF L’Institut des mondes africains (IMAF) invite ses doctorant·es à un débat ouvert avec Robin Root, anthropologue médicale du Baruch College (Université de la ville de New York) sur l’éthique de la recherche, le positionnement du chercheur, et le « relativisme culturel ». La réunion aura lieu le lundi 10 juin à 18 heures à l’IMAF. IMAF is inviting doctoral students to an open discussion with Robin Root, medical anthropologist at Baruch College (City University of New York) on research ethics, positionality, and “cultural relativism”. The meeting will take place on Monday the 10th of June at 6 pm at IMAF.

Félicitations | Congratulations Le CNRS a décerné la médaille de cristal du CNRS 2024 à Bastien Miraucourt, chargé d’édition de notre UAR. Bastien Miraucourt a porté le dossier de candidature d’AfricaE auprès du Fonds national pour la science ouverte (FNSO), dans le cadre du projet « Science ouverte pour les études africaines ». Il assure par ailleurs la coordination éditoriale de la revue Sources. Matériaux et terrains en études africaines et l’archivage en ligne des matériaux discutés dans la revue. Cette distinction récompense sa contribution au rayonnement et au progrès de la recherche scientifique.  The CNRS has awarded the CNRS 2024 Crystal Medal to Bastien Miraucourt, our UAR’s publishing officer. Bastien Miraucourt submitted AfricaE‘s application to the Fonds national pour la science ouverte (FNSO), as part of the ‘Open Science for African Studies’ project. He also provides editorial coordination for the journal Sources. Materials & Fieldwork in African Studies and the online archiving of materials discussed in the journal. This distinction rewards his contribution to the influence and progress of scientific research.
