| 1st Issue July 2024 Editorial During these quieter summer times we are in the process of preparing the first round of decolonising stories, hoping that we can release some of them this autumn already. Our series of #EADI50 events is running, and we are adding blog posts to the European Development Policy Outlook series, this time with a focus on Romania. The second of three posts on the role of language in research is out, and our thematic focus is on poverty and inequality today – besides many other reading recommendations for the summer break. From our Blog The Daily Multi-Layered Barriers Faced by Non-Native English Researchers This second of three blog posts on the role of languages in epistemic communities explores the variety of ‘everyday’ barriers faced by researchers whose first language is not English when producing, presenting and/or publishing their findings in this language: « Publishing in English does not only require a lot more time, it also often comes with a need for full text revision using professional services, which charge significant fees. » And a recent study concluded: « Non-native English speakers perform ‘worse’ than their native peers in all dimensions, and the effect is particularly strong for early-career researchers. » Read more Romania’s Development Policy: Policy Challenges and Unexplored Potential « As a newer donor of ODA, Romania faces multiple challenges. Some of these challenges include a reduced confidence to assert itself as a donor, weak political engagement with further away partner countries, excessive bureaucracy limiting innovation and efficiency, and a limited expression of a donor identity that reflects Romania’s history and comparative advantage. » However, Romania’s historical experience can also be a chance to bring more mutual learning into development cooperation. Drawing on separate inquiry tracks from these regions, it contrasts the approaches, framings, and main concerns identified by stakeholders in both settings. proposes a framework grounded in Southern priorities to strengthen agency, align objectives, and identify spaces for transformative change within the research landscape.
