 We are excited to share with you a significant new paper by Professor J. Oloka-Onyango, Professor of Law at Makerere University, Uganda, titled: « Revisiting the Struggles for Academic/Intellectual Freedom and the Social Responsibility of Intellectuals in Africa: The Case of the Dar es Salaam and Kampala Declarations. » In this thought-provoking work, Professor Oloka-Onyango revisits the historical and ongoing fight for academic freedom in Africa. By reflecting on the Dar es Salaam and Kampala Declarations, he highlights the critical role that African intellectuals play in defending academic spaces while ensuring their contributions positively impact society. This paper was originally presented as keynote reflections at the University of Dar es Salaam Colloquium (November 2023) and Eduardo Mondlane University Colloquium (April 2024).
