Editorial

In these turbulent times, we are excited to announce the very first story from our « Share your Decolonising Story » project on our blog, and the opening of the second round of submissions. Another blog post discusses possible implications of the Trump US Presidency on countries in the Global South, and our latest addition to the European Development Policy Outlook series analyses the complex relationship between EU Trade and Development Policy. Apart from the usual picks, calls and vacancies at the very bottom, we can recommend two brand-new open access books. Our thematic focus is on biodiversity today.From our BlogReflecting on our Lens: Decolonising Imagery within International DevelopmentIn this text from the first round of our « Share your Decolonising Story » project, James Andrews (Institutes of Development Studies) tells his personal journey starting in the 80s, when images of starving black and brown children were shown without any context as to « why they were starving, or what impact the history of European colonialism and neoliberal structural adjustment programmes might have had on their lives ». Departing from the understanding that « Ethical approaches to storytelling and imagery should proactively challenge unequal power dynamics », he shares his learnings and provides some practical tips for decolonising imagery.

The Relevance of Development Studies,
22 November 2024, The HagueJoin us for an event showcasing the essential role of Development Studies in addressing global challenges. PhD candidates and early-career researchers from Dutch EADI member institutions will present their work to representatives from government, civil society, and the private sector, highlighting insights from the Global South that can inform Dutch policies. Read more
