6 bourses de thèse « Moral Economies of Modern Societies » Max Planck Institut Berlin

The Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-

Universität zu Berlin, and Technische Universität Berlin are offering up to six PhD scholarships for the International Max Planck Research School for Moral Economies of Modern Societies (IMPRS Moral Economies) under the direction of Prof. Dr. Ute Frevert.

The PhD scholarships will commence on October 1st, 2014. Candidates admitted to the IMPRS Moral Economies receive a monthly grant to cover their living expenses, presently set at 1,365€. The funding is initially for two years, with consecutive extensions up to a maximum of four
years, pending successful progress evaluations.

Highly motivated M. A. (respectively M. Phil. or equivalent) graduates in history or a related field with an outstanding academic record
and a strong interest in the relevant topics are encouraged to apply for a PhD scholarship.

Application period: November 1st to December 1st, 2013.

Looking for PhD candidate : The influence of International Organizations on the emergence of transnational NGOs and NGO networks

Looking for a PhD stipend for three years (2+1) in the field of  international / transnational relations for an empirical-analytical  dissertation about the influence of International Organizations on the  emergence of transnational NGOs and NGO networks. The precise topic of the dissertation is open and will be determined jointly by the  supervisor and the candidate. The successful candidate will become a  member of the Cluster of Excellence “Formation of Normative Orders” and be based at Technische Universität Darmstadt.

Candidates should have an MA degree in political science / IR or  sociology and a research interest in international / transnational  relations. The candidate may participate in seminars on methods,  research design etc. offered by the graduate schools of TU Darmstadt and  Goethe-Universität Frankfurt, but there is no compulsory coursework.

Very good knowledge of English is required, knowledge of German is an  asset.

The successful candidate will bring a social science perspective to environmental and water resource planning; specifically, a teacher/scholar with demonstrated interest in environmental planning and management, natural resource planning, and planning for low-income communities and communities of color. The successful candidate may be called upon to teach in a distance education mode and will be encouraged to develop web-enhanced and/or web-based instruction.

Outcomes assessment and service learning are important components of the university curriculum. The successful candidate will join a university-wide cohort of faculty that will develop teaching, research, and outreach initiatives that focus on water quality, technology, and management

Overview: The Department of Geography is a student-centered department and one of nine departments and programs in the College of Social Sciences. The department offers a BA degree in geography, a minor in meteorology and a minor in interdisciplinary urban studies; and is also developing an online Certificate of Advanced Study in Community and Regional Planning and an option in City and Regional Planning that it hopes to be made available to students in 2014. Part of the department’s five-year plan is to create a separate BS degree in City and Regional Planning. The course offerings support undergraduate preparation for careers in environmental study, teaching, weather, regional and urban planning, and preparation for graduate work. The department boasts the most internationally diverse faculty in the university and takes pride in its scholarly excellence. Faculty research is supported by state of the art facilities in two of its laboratories ¿ environmental research and GIS/Remote sensing laboratories. There is opportunity for students to work with faculty on their research projects.

Faculty Responsibilities: As educators, scholars, colleagues and community members faculty have a responsibility to uphold the standards and ethics called upon by the profession. Regular responsibilities include research, publication, and other scholarly activities, as well as advising students and engaging in service at all levels of the university.

Required Education: Ph.D. in Geography, Environmental Studies, Urban and Regional Planning, Water Resource Management or a related field is preferred. Candidates nearing the completion of the doctorate (ABD) will be considered; however, for continued employment the doctorate must be completed by 7/31/2015.

Required Experience: Evidence of success in scholarly research, such as publications in peer-reviewed journals and/or publications of professional and technical reports. The successful candidate must have the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Purpose:

The Centre Coordinator supports the Centre Director for the overall operation of Centre-related activities, including providing support to financial activities; program administration and secretarial support to the Centre Director and projects.

 
Education:
Completion of university degree in a related field such as Humanities, Development Studies and any related field in the Social or Environmental Sciences.
 
Experience:
2-3 years of related work experience in an academic or related research focused unit or NGO environment providing administrative support. Experience with, or demonstrable knowledge and awareness of, issues related to critical social science research, international development, and social justice and Latin American and Caribbean region and/or communities. Experience in Latin America and the Caribbean and/or with Latin American and Caribbean communities is an asset.
 
Skills:
Knowledgeable in financial administration and has the skills to create budgets, track and reconcile cost centres, and create financial reports. Familiarity with all facets of financial spreadsheet bookkeeping and reporting; familiarity with website design and development; familiarity with proposal writing, project development, and fundraising to the point of being able to work comfortably with colleagues pursuing these activities; ability to work effectively both individually and as a member of a team. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Spanish; courteous and effective comportment with people of diverse ages, cultural and linguistic backgrounds, temperaments, and social stations; resourcefulness, problem-solving, and research abilities; ability to work effectively in an environment of high volume and competing demands; ability to multi-task; excellent organizational skills; good judgment; initiative; tact and discretion; ability to work accurately with attention to detail; excellent conceptual and analytical abilities; editorial experience; Intermediate proficiency in the following software platforms for word-processing (MS Word), email, webpage construction (Netscape Composer, Dreamweaver), and spreadsheet and database use (Excel, Access, Endnote). Familiarity with graphic and textual layout and design software (Photoshop, Adobe InDesign or equivalent).
