Prix d’excellence

The European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI) announces the 2012 prize for excellence in development research. The prize, worth €1 000, will be awarded for an essay on an issue of development studies in any field of the social sciences submitted and written by a postgraduate student from an EADI member country or attending a programme at an institutional member of the Association.

1. Manuscripts should be submitted as email attachments in Word format to prize2012@eadi.org. Articles should be formatted as A4 documents, double-spaced and with ample margins. All pages (including those containing only diagrams and tables) should be numbered consecutively.
2. Articles may be submitted in English or French. Authors should present texts that were language-edited by a native speaker of either French or English, if they are not certain whether or not their text corresponds linguistically to international standards. A spelling check and grammar check should be performed before sending manuscripts to EADI.
3. Entries for the EADI Prize for Development Studies should be essays of between
   5 000 and 7 000 words (including notes + annexes, excluding references).
4. In addition to the abstract, authors are asked to give five keywords.
5. The article should begin with an indented and italicised abstract of around 100 words, which should describe the main arguments and conclusions of the article.
6. The author’s full address and other contact information should be included on a separate coversheet. Any acknowledgements should be included on the coversheet, as should a note of the exact length of the article.
7. All diagrams, charts and graphs should be referred to as figures and consecutively numbered. Tables should be kept to a minimum and contain only essential data. Each figure and table must be given an Arabic numeral, followed by a heading, and be referred to in the text.
8. In addition, a CV of the author should be submitted.
9. Entries not fulfilling these formal criteria will not be accepted.

We accept entries from people who have separated from an EADI institute or country up to three years after the event. We do not accept any papers which have been published before. Subjects may be chosen from any field of development studies, but contestants are asked to bear in mind that their work will be subject to scrutiny by one of the EADI Working Groups prior to being sent on to the jury. Entries coherent with Working Group themes will, therefore, clearly enjoy an advantage. The Jury for the 2012 EADI Prize for Development Studies will make its decision known in September 2012. The prize winner will be invited to the Association’s Annual Directors’ meeting (Autumn 2012, date tbc) where the award ceremony will take place. Both the winning entry and other high quality entries might be considered for publication in the European Journal of Development Research (which is upon the decision of the Editors after a refereeing process).
