Pakistan’s transformation from a country once projected as a model of Muslim enlightenment to a state now faced with a lethal Islamist challenge has dominated headlines. While the failure of governance has hastened this decline, it is the lack of consensus over the role and meaning of Islam that has left the state vulnerable and scarred by profound ideological confusion.
