Denis Sassou Nguesso, President of the Republic of the Congo, the premier international business & investment forum focused on infrastructure in Africa, will take place in Brazzaville from February 6th to 7th, 2014.

The BUILD AFRICA Forum: a global response to the African infrastructure deficit
Africa’s infrastructure deficit severely hampers the continent’s competitiveness in the world market, decreasing productivity by 40% due to inadequate infrastructure. Despite numerous initiatives across the continent, Africa needs roughly $50 billion USD in annual investments to close its infrastructure gap. For the first time in Sub -Saharan Africa, the BUILD AFRICA Forum will provide a framework for practical exchange between the global players who are forging Africa’s development. For two days, from February 6th -7th 2013, over 500 leaders and experts from around the globe will gather to craft solutions to a question at the heart of public policy debate: How can we encourage social and economic development through new infrastructure in Africa?

A view of the African continent from the Republic of the Congo
10 years of intensive, accelerated investment and infrastructure planning, under the leadership of President Denis Sassou Nguesso and coordinated by the General Delegation for Major Public Works, have allowed the Congo to leap forward in terms of development, modernization and industrialization. As a spearhead for infrastructure development in Central Africa and organizer of the upcoming pan-African games in 2015, the Congo is an ideal springboard for practical reflexion, seeking to unleash the continent’s growth potential through new infrastructure.

•          Less than 10% (in 10 countries) and less than 50% (in 33 countries) of roads in Africa are paved.

•          40% of the population lacks access to safe water and 60% of the population lacks basic sanitation.

•          Only 30% of the African population have access to electricity.

•          Africa has the lowest telephone penetration – 14% (the world average is 52%) and the lowest Internet penetration – 3% (the world average is 14%).

Séminaire Siglo XX – Século XX (8 nov, Paris)

La première séance du séminaire Siglo XX – Século XX aura lieu le vendredi 8 novembre 2013, en salle Paul Rivet entre 14h et 17h (IHEAL, 5e étage gauche), et sera consacrée à la question des cultures de masse. Manuel Rodriguez Barriga (IHEAL / CREDA – UMR 7227) présentera ses recherches sur Cinéma et culture de masse à Rio de Janeiro dans les années 1920 ; Lucie Hémeury (IHEAL / CREDA – UMR 7227) interviendra sur Sports, médias et péronisme en Argentine : la culture de masse au temps de la democratizació n del bienestar (1946-1955).

Le séminaire Siglo XX – Século XX est obligatoire pour tous les étudiants inscrits en M2R et en doctorat d’histoire à l’IHEAL. Il est fortement conseillé aux étudiants de master 1 inscrits en histoire et ouvert à toute autre personne dans la limite des places disponibles. Les séances suivantes auront lieu les vendredi 15 novembre, 22 novembre, 29 novembre, 6 décembre et 20 décembre 2013, toujours en salle Paul Rivet et entre 14h et 17h.

The Latin American Studies Program
(http://www.wm.edu/as/globalstudies/latinamerican/ [1]) of the College of William & Mary invites applications from recent Ph.Ds for the position of a Mellon Faculty Fellow in the humanities or social sciences. Latin American Studies is an interdisciplinary major, and is supported by more than 20 faculty affiliates from 10 departments. The successful candidate will have a two-year appointment, a three-course load per year, and will also benefit from mentorship and research support. The qualifications are Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment (August 10, 2014), and a demonstrated interest in blending undergraduate teaching with research in Latin American Studies. Additional expertise in Afro-Latin America and the Caribbean is preferred.

For full consideration, application materials are due by November 11, 2013. Review of applications will begin at that time. Applications received after the review date will be considered if needed until Feb.
1, 2014.
