Net Journal of Agricultural Science (NJAS) is an international peer-reviewed open access journal, which publishes innovative work from all
areas related to Agricultural Science.

NJAS covers all areas of agriculture including arid soil research and rehabilitation, agricultural genomics, stored products research, tree fruit
production, pesticide science, post harvest biology and technology, seed science research, irrigation, agricultural engineering, water resources
management, agronomy, animal science, physiology and morphology, aquaculture, crop science, dairy science, entomology, fish and fisheries,
forestry, freshwater science, horticulture, poultry science, soil science, systematic biology, veterinary, virology, viticulture, weed biology,
agricultural economics and agribusiness.

The Claude Ake Visiting Chair 2014: Invitation to apply for two positions!

The Department of Peace and Conflict Research and the Nordic Africa Institute currently invite applications to the Claude Ake Visiting
Chair for 2014. As a novelty for year 2014, we invite applications for two different positions:

*   One Visiting Chair for a more senior professor, in line with previous holders of the Chair. Applicants for this position should be
established and internationally recognised senior scholars with professorial competence in their respective fields of expertise.
Normally, this translates to so-called Full Professors or Associate Professors, or their equivalence.
*   One Visiting Fellowship for a junior faculty, who holds a Ph.D. degree in a relevant field, and has showed promising results.
Normally, this translates into an Assistant Professor, or its equivalence.

The visiting time period is normally a minimum of two months and maximum of three months (90 days). A stay for up to 6 months (one full
academic semester) may be negotiable, depending on incurred costs.  Applications from female candidates are encouraged.
The visiting chair holder is offered a conducive environment to pursue his or her own research, while there is also opportunity for
lecturing, holding seminars and contributing to ongoing research activities at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research and the
Nordic Africa Institute.

The Claude Ake Visiting Chair was set up in 2003 at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research, Uppsala University (DPCR), in
collaboration with the Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) and with funding from the Swedish Government. The Chair honours the memory of Professor
Claude Ake, a distinguished scholar, philosopher, teacher and humanist, who died tragically in 1996. The Chair is intended for
scholars who, like Claude Ake, combine a profound commitment to scholarship with a strong advocacy for social justice. The Chair is
open to prominent social scientists working at African universities with problems related to war, peace, conflict resolution, human rights, democracy and development on the African continent.

WISER Book Launch: Jeff Guy on Theophilus Shepstone

WiSER and UKZN Press invite you to the Launch of a new Book by Jeff Guy

Theophilus Shepstone and the Forging of Natal: African Autonomy and Settler Colonialism in the Making of Traditional Authority is an account of the life of Theophilus Shepstone, Secretary for Native Affairs in the Colony of Natal from 1846 to 1876 and an examination of the nature of the concept of traditional authority in South Africa today.

As originally conceived the book intended to place Shepstone in the context provided by some of Jeff Guy’s previous books (The Destruction of the Zulu Kingdom, 1979; The Heretic: a Study of the Life of John William Colenso, 1983. The View Across the River: Harriette Colenso and the Zulu struggle against Imperialism, 2001). But, in the process of researching and writing, it became apparent that such widely used concepts as indirect rule and segregation, so often associated with Shepstone, had lost whatever explanatory value they might have had. Furthermore the urgent contemporary debates in South Africa over the nature of customary law and traditional authority and their role in a constitutional democracy suggested strongly that
Shepstone’s part in their origins should be re-assessed. The book does this however, not by a process of political theorization, but by placing the arguments very deliberately in a historical narrative and the development of personality and character in their own times. This is done out of the conviction that, unless understood as history, the most contentious contemporary issues will continue to be misunderstood.

Africaniste, ses recherches se situent à la jonction de l’anthropologie médicale, des études scientifiques et technologiques, des études
post-coloniales et de l’économie politique. Elle travaille actuellement sur trois principaux projets de recherche. Dans son livre « *Speculative
Markets: Drug Circuits and Derivative Life in Nigeria** » (sous presse), *elle analyse les interrelations entre les pratiques de spéculation de *l’industrie pharmaceutique* et les pratiques spéculatives des *marchés de la drogue nigérians*.  En outre, elle travaille également sur l’interrelation entre recherche clinique, éthique et logiques du marché quant aux questions du *VIH-sida en Afrique*. Enfin, elle mène également des recherches sur les relations entre la « sécurité » (relatifs au pétrole et au terrorisme) et la santé mondiale (concernant le sida) en Afrique de l’Ouest. Le projet étudie comment les différentes formes de privatisation, y compris une guerre sans fin (endless war), les soins de santé gérés par les associations
non-gouvernementales, la recherche clinique et l’humanitaire sont au cœur *des nouvelles logiques de sécurité américaines*.****
